🔧 XT4 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and can prevent your blower fan from working harder than it needs to.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Keep hands/tools away from any yellow connectors (airbag wiring) under the dash.
- Use gentle pressure on interior trim to avoid breaking clips.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out while you work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the cabin filter access area
- Open the glove box and use a small flashlight to look behind/around it on the passenger side.
- On your XT4, the cabin filter is accessed from the passenger side behind the glove box area (some trims use a small access door; others require dropping the glove box).
Step 2: Remove the passenger-side trim panel (if equipped)
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (a plastic pry tool that pops trim clips without scratching) to gently pop off the small side trim/end-cap panel at the right side of the dash (passenger door-open area), if it blocks access.
- Set the panel aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 3: Choose your access method (A or B)
- Method A (Access door visible): If you see a rectangular cover labeled for the filter behind/under the glove box, go to Step 4.
- Method B (No door visible): If the filter area is hidden, you’ll drop the glove box (Step 5).
Step 4: Method A — Remove the filter access door
- Remove any retaining screw(s) using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension, or a Torx T15 driver (GM commonly uses one of these depending on build).
- Unclip the door by hand and pull it off.
- If screws are present on reassembly, Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only; do not overtighten plastic).
Step 5: Method B — Drop the glove box (if needed)
- Locate the glove box “stop” tabs/arms on each side inside the glove box opening.
- Press the sides of the glove box inward by hand to release the stops, then let the glove box swing down.
- If there is a slow-down strap/damper on the right side, carefully unhook it by hand (no tools needed).
- If any screws/fasteners are present, remove them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (use a 6" socket extension if needed), then Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) on reassembly.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Open the filter housing/door (if not already open) by releasing the tabs by hand.
- Slide the old filter straight out with nitrile gloves on.
- Tip: Keep it level to avoid spilling debris.
Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install the filter in the same direction the old one came out (arrow should match the airflow direction marked on the housing, if present).
- Make sure it seats fully and isn’t folded or pinched.
Step 8: Reinstall the housing door and panels
- Reinstall the filter door and snap the tabs in place by hand.
- If equipped, install the screw(s) using a 7mm socket or Torx T15 driver and Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Lift the glove box back up, reattach the damper strap (if removed), and re-engage the stops.
- Reinstall any dash side trim using the trim removal tool (plastic) to align clips, then press in by hand until fully seated.
✅ After Repair
- Start your XT4 and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
- If you notice whistling, reopen the housing and confirm the filter is fully seated.
