Replacing the cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and debris from blowing through your RAV4’s vents. The filter is located behind the glove box and is a very beginner-friendly repair.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your RAV4 on level ground and turn the ignition off.
• Open the front passenger door fully so you have room to work.
• Empty the glove box so nothing spills out when it drops down.
• No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

• Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
• Remove all items from the glove box.
• Use a flashlight if the area is hard to see.
• Keep small items in a cup.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper

• Look on the right side of the glove box for the small plastic damper arm.
• The damper is a small soft-close arm that slows the glove box as it opens.
• Use your fingers to gently slide the damper arm off its small mounting pin.
• Do not pull hard. The plastic can break if forced.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box

• Use both hands to gently press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box.
• This releases the side stops from the dashboard opening.
• Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
• Press near the upper corners.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

• Use your hands to locate the rectangular cabin filter access cover behind the glove box.
• Press the locking tab on the side of the cover.
• Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
• Use a flashlight to check the cover clips before pulling.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

• Use your fingers to pull the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
• Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the old filter before removal.
• On your RAV4, the airflow direction should point downward when installed.
• Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses because dust and leaves may fall out.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

• Hold the new cabin air filter with the airflow arrow pointing downward.
• Slide the filter straight into the housing using your hands.
• Make sure the filter sits flat and is not folded or crushed.
• Airflow arrow points down.

Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover

• Use your hands to reinstall the cabin filter access cover.
• Push it into place until the locking tab clicks.
• Gently tug the cover to make sure it is secure.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

• Use both hands to lift the glove box back into position.
• Press inward on the sides again so the side stops pass back into the dashboard opening.
• Reconnect the glove box damper arm onto its mounting pin by hand.
• Open and close the glove box once to confirm smooth movement.

✅ After Repair

• Start your RAV4 and turn the blower fan on low, then high.
• Check that airflow comes from the vents normally.
• Listen for rattles behind the glove box, which may mean the filter cover is not fully clipped in.
• If the air smells musty, run the fan with fresh-air mode selected for a few minutes.
