📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Forester on level ground and turn the ignition off.
• Empty the glove box so nothing spills when it swings down.
• Move the front passenger seat rearward to give yourself more room.
• Look at the new filter before installing it. The airflow arrow shows which way air should pass through the filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

• Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
• Remove all papers, manuals, and loose items.
• Use the flashlight if needed so you can see both sides of the glove box.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper Arm

• The damper arm is the small plastic support on the right side that slows the glove box as it opens.
• Use your fingers to gently slide or pop the damper arm off its small peg on the glove box.
• Do not pry hard. It should release with light hand pressure.
• Use gentle pressure only.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box Past Its Stops

• Use both hands to squeeze the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
• While squeezing, lower the glove box down past the side stops.
• The glove box will swing downward, giving access to the cabin filter door behind it.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

• Use your fingers to press the tabs on the cabin filter cover.
• Pull the cover straight out and set it aside.
• Use the flashlight to look at the old filter’s arrow direction before removing it.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

• Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
• Keep it level so dust, leaves, and debris do not fall into the HVAC box.
• Use the shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to carefully clean loose debris around the filter opening.
• Do not push the vacuum nozzle deep into the housing.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

• Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the slot.
• Match the airflow arrow direction to the original filter. On your Forester, the filter should be installed with the airflow direction matching the HVAC airflow through the case.
• Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the housing.
• Do not crush the filter edges.

Step 7: Reinstall the Cabin Filter Cover

• Use your hands to place the cabin filter cover back over the opening.
• Press until the tabs click into place.
• Gently tug on the cover to make sure it is secure.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

• Use both hands to lift the glove box upward.
• Squeeze the sides inward again so the side stops pass back into place.
• Reconnect the damper arm to the small peg on the right side of the glove box.
• Open and close the glove box once to make sure it moves normally.

Step 9: Final Check

• Start your Forester and turn the blower fan on low, then high.
• Listen for unusual fluttering or rattling from behind the glove box.
• If you hear noise, turn the fan off and recheck that the filter is seated flat and the cover is fully latched.
