🔧 Forte - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Forte’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the glovebox hinge areas while lowering it.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is stable.
- Turn the HVAC system OFF before removing the old filter.
- Have a trash bag ready for debris.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the glovebox
- Open the glovebox fully and use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glovebox damper (the small arm that slows the drop).
Step 2: Disconnect the glovebox damper
- Using your hand (or a plastic trim tool (non-marring) if it’s tight), gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the glovebox.
- The damper is a small plastic linkage that controls how fast the glovebox lowers.
Step 3: Drop the glovebox down
- Push in on both sides of the glovebox (near the upper corners) with your hands to clear the side stops.
- Lower the glovebox slowly until it hangs down, giving you access behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glovebox, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Use your fingers (or a plastic trim tool (non-marring)) to press the cover tabs and pull the cover off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out using nitrile gloves.
- Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame (you’ll match this on the new one).
- Pull slowly to avoid dumping leaves/dust.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Slide the new filter into the slot, keeping it flat (don’t fold it).
- Match the airflow arrow to the same direction as the old filter was installed.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glovebox
- Reinstall the filter cover by aligning it and pressing until the tabs click in.
- Lift the glovebox back up, then push in the sides to get the side stops back into position.
- Reattach the glovebox damper arm to its pin using your hand; it should snap on securely.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and run the fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure everything sounds normal.
- If you notice a musty smell, run the fan for a few minutes with A/C ON to dry the HVAC box.
