🔧 Sonata - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Sonata’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) system before it reaches the cabin. Replacing it helps reduce odors, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the vents.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Make sure the car is fully OFF before working around the glove box and HVAC area.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
- Open the passenger door for better access and lighting.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out during removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Open the glove box and remove all items.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “dampener” arm (a small linkage that slows the glove box as it opens).
Step 2: Release the glove box dampener
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the dampener arm off its pin (if it’s tight).
- If needed, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver while supporting the arm with your other hand.
- Go slow—this plastic can crack.
Step 3: Lower the glove box for access
- Use your hands and gently push in the glove box sides to clear the stopper tabs (the little “ears” that normally prevent the glove box from dropping).
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
- Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter access door directly behind the glove box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter door
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to press the locking tabs (usually one on each side) and pull the filter door straight off.
- Set the door aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Use your hands to slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level as you remove it so trapped debris doesn’t dump into the blower housing.
- Use a flashlight to check inside for leaves or dirt; do not push debris deeper.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Use the flashlight to find the airflow direction marking on the filter (usually an arrow).
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one came out (match the airflow arrow).
- Slide it in straight and fully seated without bending the filter frame.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter door by pushing it on until the tabs click, using your hands (assist with the plastic trim removal tool only if needed).
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in to get past the stopper tabs again.
- Reconnect the dampener arm onto its pin using your hands (assist gently with the plastic trim removal tool if tight).
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and run the fan at medium/high for 30 seconds to confirm good airflow.
- Listen for any clicking or rubbing behind the glove box (a sign the filter door isn’t fully latched).
- If there’s a musty smell, run fresh air (not recirculate) for a few minutes.
