🔧 Explorer - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter on your Explorer is behind the glove box. Replacing it helps restore airflow and keeps dust, pollen, and debris out of the HVAC system.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Do not force the glove box; the hinges and stops can break.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.
  • Work gently around the passenger airbag area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or remote from the vehicle.
  • Open the front passenger door for easier access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Empty the glove box first so it does not drop when lowered.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a trim panel tool to gently push in the glove box side stops if needed.
  • Lower the glove box slowly until it hangs down.
  • Work slowly to avoid cracking the plastic.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Look behind the glove box for the cabin air filter access cover.
  • Use your hands or a trim panel tool to release the cover tabs.
  • Pull the cover straight out.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter out carefully.
  • Pay attention to the airflow arrow on the filter before removing it.
  • Check for leaves and debris in the housing.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new cabin air filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully in the housing.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Snap the filter cover back into place by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up and let the side stops catch properly.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens and closes smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower fan on and confirm airflow feels stronger.
  • Check for any rattles from the glove box area.
  • If the air still smells stale, inspect the HVAC intake for debris.
