🔧 MDX - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your MDX’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen down inside the cabin.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back for more room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- Remove any items inside so you can see and work clearly.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small damper arm (a little plastic arm that slows the glove box from dropping).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its peg using your fingers.
- If it’s tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pry it off. Pry gently to avoid breaking tabs.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With both hands, press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops.”
- Let the glove box rotate down slowly. (It will hang lower and expose the cabin filter door behind it.)
- Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter access door.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Pinch the two locking tabs on the filter door by hand.
- Pull the door straight off. Use nitrile gloves if you want to avoid dust on your hands.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the filter housing.
- Use a flashlight to check the housing for leaves/dust; wipe out gently by hand (with nitrile gloves) if needed.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install the new filter so the airflow arrow points toward the rear of the vehicle (toward the HVAC blower housing). Arrow direction matters for best filtering.
- Slide it in evenly by hand—don’t bend or crush the filter.
Step 7: Reinstall the filter door and glove box
- Reinstall the access door by hand until both tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up, then press inward on the sides to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its peg by hand (use the flashlight to line it up).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium speed to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
- Cycle HVAC modes (face/floor/defrost) to ensure everything sounds normal.
- If there was an odor, run fresh air (not recirc) for a few minutes.
