🔧 Traverse - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter in your Traverse helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of the HVAC system. The filter is located behind the glove box, so this is a simple interior job with no engine work needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working around the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ Do not force the glove box down; the plastic stops and damper can break.
  • ⚠️ Keep small items from the glove box out of the footwell so they do not interfere with the pedals.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Traverse on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition completely off.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it is lowered.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps release clips without scratching interior panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Remove all papers, manuals, and loose items from inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look at both sides of the glove box opening.
  • Tip: Lay items on the passenger seat.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper

  • Look on the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm.
  • The damper is the small plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens.
  • Use your fingers or a trim removal tool to gently unhook the damper from the glove box.
  • Do not pull hard; the plastic tab can snap.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box Past the Stops

  • Squeeze both sides of the glove box inward by hand.
  • While squeezing, lower the glove box down past its side stops.
  • If the sides feel stiff, use a trim removal tool carefully to help guide the stops inward.
  • Let the glove box hang down gently.
  • Tip: Support it with one hand.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Door

  • Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter access door behind the glove box opening.
  • Press the retaining tabs on the filter door by hand.
  • If needed, use a trim removal tool to gently release the tabs.
  • Pull the filter door straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Grip the old cabin air filter by hand and slide it straight out.
  • Watch the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves or debris inside the filter slot.
  • Remove loose debris by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Tip: Note arrow direction before removal.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Compare the new cabin air filter to the old one by hand to confirm the same size and shape.
  • Slide the new cabin air filter into the slot with the airflow arrow facing the same direction as the old filter.
  • Do not crush or fold the filter while installing it.
  • Push it in until it sits fully inside the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the Cabin Filter Door

  • Place the cabin filter door back over the opening by hand.
  • Press the door until the tabs click into place.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the door is fully seated and not loose.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Lift the glove box back up by hand.
  • Squeeze both sides inward again and guide the side stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the right-side damper arm by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box once to make sure it moves smoothly.

Step 9: Final Check

  • Start your Traverse.
  • Turn the HVAC fan on using the dash controls.
  • Check for normal airflow from the vents.
  • Listen for rattles behind the glove box; a rattle usually means the filter door is not clipped in fully.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Run the blower fan on low, medium, and high speeds.
  • ✅ Check that airflow is even and quiet.
  • ✅ Make sure the glove box opens, closes, and latches normally.
  • ✅ Replace the cabin air filter about every 12,000-15,000 miles, or sooner in dusty areas.
