🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

The cabin air filter in your Explorer traps dust, pollen, and debris before they reach the HVAC system. Replacing it on time helps airflow stay strong and keeps the air inside the cabin cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Keep the glove box fully supported so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Work carefully around the passenger airbag area; do not force trim panels.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove any items inside so they do not fall out.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a flat trim tool to gently press in the side walls of the glove box.
  • Let the glove box swing down slowly.
  • Do not force the hinges.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Locate the rectangular filter access cover behind the glove box.
  • Use your hands or a flat trim tool to release the cover tabs.
  • Set the cover aside.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Use your hands to pull the old cabin air filter straight out.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow on the filter before removing it.
  • Remember the arrow direction.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new filter into the housing.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the same direction as the old filter.
  • Seat the filter fully and evenly.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Use your hands to snap the filter cover back into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the side walls inward if needed.
  • Make sure the glove box opens and closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the blower on high.
  • Check that airflow from the vents is strong and smooth.
  • Listen for rattles or loose trim behind the glove box.
