🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

The cabin air filter on your Equinox sits behind the glove box. Replacing it helps restore airflow and reduces dust, pollen, and odors in the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Keep the glove box supported while removing it so it does not drop suddenly.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.
  • Work gently to avoid breaking plastic tabs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open the glove box and clear out all contents before starting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all items inside.
  • Use your hands to hold the glove box steady.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use your hands to gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward.
  • This lets the glove box drop past the built-in stops.
  • Move slowly so the tabs do not crack.

Step 3: Lower the glove box

  • Let the glove box swing down carefully.
  • If needed, use a trim panel tool (plastic) to help release any tight plastic clips.

Step 4: Remove the cabin air filter cover

  • Locate the cabin filter housing behind the glove box.
  • Use your hands to release the filter cover tabs and remove the cover.

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter out of the housing.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter before removing it.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Install the new cabin air filter with the airflow arrow pointed the same direction as the old one.
  • Push it in fully so it sits flat in the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by pressing it into place with your hands.
  • Lift the glove box back up and gently squeeze the sides inward so it can pass the stops.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it latches normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower fan on and check for strong airflow.
  • Listen for any rattles from the glove box area.
  • If airflow is still weak, recheck that the filter is seated correctly.
