šŸ”§ Forte - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through the cabin air filter before it comes out of the vents. Replacing a dirty filter improves airflow, reduces odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs—glove box parts can crack if twisted.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your A4 on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Open the passenger door fully for better access and lighting.
  • Tip: Take a photo before removal.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a little slow-down strap that controls how the glove box drops).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Carefully pry the damper arm off its pin using a small flathead screwdriver or a trim removal tool.
  • Tip: Pry gently—it's just a plastic clip.

Step 3: Release the glove box side stoppers

  • On both sides of the glove box, there are built-in ā€œstoppersā€ (plastic bumps) that prevent it from dropping all the way down.
  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stoppers, then let the glove box swing downward.
  • Use work gloves to improve grip and protect your hands.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand; if it’s tight, use a trim removal tool to help start it.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level so trapped leaves/dust don’t dump into the housing.
  • Tip: Vacuum loose debris if needed.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old filter. Most filters are marked AIR FLOW; typically it points down toward the blower fan in the housing.
  • Slide the filter fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to get past the stoppers.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to its pin by hand; if needed, guide it with a small flathead screwdriver.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the fan on high for 30 seconds.
  • Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
  • If you hear fluttering, the filter may not be seated flat—recheck the cover and filter position.
