🔧 Terrain - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow through the vents.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
Assumption: your Terrain uses the glovebox-access filter door (most do).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the dash.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—use steady pressure to avoid breaking them.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for more working room.
- Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out when it drops down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glovebox
- Open the glovebox fully.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the small “dampener” arm (a small strap/arm that slows the glovebox).
Step 2: Release the glovebox stops
- Press inward on both sides of the glovebox to clear the built-in stops.
- If the sides are stiff, use a trim removal tool gently to help push the glovebox side past the stop. Go slow—tabs can snap.
Step 3: Disconnect the glovebox dampener
- On the right side, unclip the dampener arm from the glovebox (it usually pops off a small peg).
- Use a trim removal tool if needed and pull straight off with steady pressure.
- Dampener = the small arm that slows glovebox opening.
Step 4: Lower the glovebox to access the filter door
- Let the glovebox swing down gently.
- Use a flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter access door behind the glovebox.
Step 5: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Press the retaining tabs on the door and pull the door off.
- Use a trim removal tool to help press tabs if they’re tight.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Wear nitrile gloves—it can be dusty and full of debris.
- Tip: Keep the dirty side facing up.
Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically the arrow points down toward the floor).
- Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 8: Reinstall the door and glovebox
- Reinstall the filter access door until the tabs click in place.
- Reconnect the dampener arm by pushing it back onto its peg.
- Push the glovebox sides inward again to pass the stops and close the glovebox.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on all speeds to confirm good airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculate to ensure no rubbing noises.
- If you hear a flap/rattle, re-check that the filter door is fully latched.
