🔧 Fusion - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents (heat/AC). When it’s clogged, airflow gets weak and you may notice musty smells or more dust inside.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key (or power off) before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic panels—Ford interior clips can crack if pried too hard.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room to work.
  • Have a flashlight ready—most of the work is under the passenger-side dash.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Clear access at the glove box area

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small damper arm (a little strap/arm that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Lower the glove box

  • Gently push inward on both sides of the glove box to release the side stops, then let the glove box swing downward.
  • If equipped with a damper arm, carefully pop it off its pin by hand (no tool if possible). Go slow—plastic gets brittle.

Step 3: Remove the lower/side trim panel (if it blocks the filter door)

  • If you can’t clearly see a rectangular cabin filter access door behind the glove box, remove the nearby trim panel.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the panel clips loose.
  • If there are screws, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Locate the cabin filter cover (rectangular door) behind the glove box area.
  • Release the tabs by hand; if tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic) gently.
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old filter out carefully (it may drag on the housing).
  • Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter (usually marked AIR FLOW).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Insert the new filter in the same orientation as the old one, matching the AIR FLOW arrow direction.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seats in the housing (no corner folded over).

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and reassemble

  • Reinstall the filter access door until the tabs click in place.
  • If you removed any trim, reinstall it using the 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension, then press any clips back in by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up, reattach the damper arm (if equipped), and pop the glove box side stops back into place.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Fusion and run the fan on medium, then high, to confirm stronger airflow and no rattles.
  • If you hear a ticking or fluttering noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck that it’s flat in the housing.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
