🔧 Flex - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the cabin air filter helps your A/C and heater breathe easier and keeps dust, pollen, and odors out of the cabin. On your Flex, the filter sits behind the glove box, so this is a quick interior job with no lifting required.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
Assumption: Your Flex uses the common behind-glovebox filter access.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working around the dash.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and “drop” the glove box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use your hands to gently push the glove box sides inward (this clears the built-in stops).
- Let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.
- Tip: Go slow to avoid bending the hinges.
Step 2: Locate the cabin filter access door
- Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box opening.
- Find the rectangular filter cover/door on the HVAC case (the big black plastic box).
Step 3: Remove the filter cover
- Use your fingers or a trim removal tool set to release the cover tabs.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
- Tip: Pry lightly—tabs break if twisted.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Wear nitrile gloves and pull the filter straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—do not crush the plastic housing.
- Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter (you’ll match this on the new one).
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the “Air Flow” arrow on the new filter.
- Slide the new filter in the same direction as the old one came out, keeping it square so it doesn’t fold.
- Make sure it seats fully (no corner sticking out).
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover and press until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up, then push the sides inward again to get past the stops.
- Close the glove box and confirm it opens/closes smoothly.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium and high to confirm normal airflow.
- Listen for whistling—if you hear it, the filter may not be seated flat.
- If your filter is charcoal/odor type, expect reduced smells after a few minutes of airflow.
