🔧 Escape - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Escape’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the A/C and heater vents. When it gets dirty, you can get weak airflow, musty smells, and more dust inside the cabin.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little support that slows the glove box). It’s easy to miss.
Step 2: Remove the passenger-side trim panel (if equipped)
- On the right side of the center console (passenger footwell area), gently pry off the small side trim panel using a trim removal tool.
- Set the panel aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 3: Release the glove box so it drops down
- If your Escape has a glove box damper screw/fastener: remove it using a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the built-in “stops,” then let the glove box swing downward.
- Go slow—don’t yank on the glove box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover on the HVAC housing.
- Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand (use a flashlight to see the tabs clearly).
Step 5: Pull out the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Keep the filter level as you remove it to reduce debris dropping into the housing.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct airflow direction)
- Find the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install the filter with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) on your Escape.
- Slide it in until it’s fully seated and not folded or buckled.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and put the glove box back
- Reinstall the filter access cover by hand until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and re-engage the glove box stops (push the sides inward again if needed).
- If removed, reinstall the damper fastener using the 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension and snug it (do not overtighten).
- Reinstall the side trim panel by pressing it back in place by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between A/C and heat and listen for any rattles (a rattle can mean the filter cover isn’t fully clipped).
- If you had a musty smell, run fresh air (not recirculate) for a few minutes.
