๐Ÿ”ง Mustang - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter helps keep dust, pollen, and debris out of the air coming through your vents. On your Mustang, the cabin filter is located behind the glove box area and can be changed without removing major interior parts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Park your Mustang on level ground and switch the ignition off.
  • โš ๏ธ Do not force plastic trim pieces; they can crack if pulled at the wrong angle.
  • ๐Ÿงค Wear gloves if the old filter is dirty or dusty.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿš— Park your Mustang on a flat surface.
  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Set the parking brake.
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the key fob away from the car.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it swings down.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Use a flashlight so you can clearly see the filter door behind the glove box.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove all items from inside the glove box.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the sides of the glove box opening.
  • Keep small items in a cup.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Stops

  • Use both hands to gently squeeze the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
  • The glove box has small side stops. These stops keep it from dropping too far during normal use.
  • While squeezing the sides inward, let the glove box swing downward slowly.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool to gently help guide the plastic edge past the stop.
  • Do not yank the glove box downward.

Step 3: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper

  • Use a flashlight to find the small damper arm on the side of the glove box.
  • A damper is a small plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens.
  • Use your fingers or a trim removal tool to gently slide the damper arm off its mounting pin.
  • Let the glove box hang down carefully.

Step 4: Locate the Cabin Filter Door

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the lowered glove box.
  • Find the rectangular cabin filter access door on the HVAC housing.
  • The HVAC housing is the black plastic air box behind the dashboard that routes air to the vents.

Step 5: Remove the Filter Access Door

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the cabin filter door.
  • If the tab is hard to move, use a trim removal tool gently on the tab.
  • Pull the access door straight off and set it aside.
  • No torque spec applies because this access door uses plastic clips, not bolts.

Step 6: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter out of the housing.
  • Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the old filter before removing it fully.
  • Keep the dirty side facing upward if possible so loose debris does not fall into the blower area.
  • If debris falls near the opening, use a gloved hand to remove it gently.

Step 7: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Compare the new cabin air filter to the old one using your hands and flashlight.
  • Install the new filter with the airflow arrow facing the same direction as the old filter.
  • Slide the filter into the housing slowly so the pleats do not fold over.
  • The pleats are the folded paper sections that trap dust and pollen.
  • Do not crush the new filter.

Step 8: Reinstall the Filter Access Door

  • Use your hands to align the access door with the filter opening.
  • Push the door into place until the locking tab clicks.
  • Gently tug the door with your fingers to confirm it is fully clipped in.
  • No torque spec applies because this part clips in by hand.

Step 9: Reattach the Glove Box Damper

  • Use your hands to lift the glove box slightly.
  • Slide the damper arm back onto its mounting pin.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm it is seated correctly.

Step 10: Raise and Latch the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to lift the glove box back into position.
  • Gently squeeze the sides inward again so the glove box stops pass back into the dash opening.
  • Close the glove box fully and make sure it latches smoothly.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Start your Mustang and turn the blower fan on low, medium, and high.
  • ๐Ÿ‘‚ Listen for unusual ticking or rubbing sounds from the passenger-side dash area.
  • โœ… Make sure airflow from the vents feels normal.
  • ๐Ÿงผ If there was a musty smell, run the fan for a few minutes with fresh air selected.
  • ๐Ÿ“… Replace the cabin air filter about every 15,000-20,000 miles, or sooner in dusty areas.
