🔧 Mustang - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air entering your Mustang’s heating and A/C system. Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduce odors, and keep dust and pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before starting so the HVAC blower does not run while the filter is removed.
- ⚠️ Work gently around the plastic cowl trim near the windshield; the clips can break if forced.
- ⚠️ Do not drop leaves or debris into the filter opening.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Go to the front of your Mustang and release the secondary hood latch by hand.

Step 3: Remove Loose Debris
- Use a shop vacuum to remove leaves, dirt, and debris from the cowl area.
- Use gloves to pick out larger debris by hand if needed.
- Keep debris out of the opening.
Step 4: Lift the Cowl Access Cover
- Use a flat trim removal tool to gently lift the passenger-side cowl access cover.

- Do not bend the cowl sharply, because the plastic can crack.
Step 5: Remove the Cabin Air Filter Cover
- Use your hand to release the small filter housing cover or retaining tab.
- Lift the cover away from the filter opening.
- Set the cover aside where it will not fall into the engine bay.
Step 6: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Use your hand to pull the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
- Watch the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it fully.
- The airflow arrow shows the direction air moves through the filter.
- Do not shake the old filter over the opening.
Step 7: Clean the Filter Housing
- Use a shop vacuum to clean loose dirt from around the filter housing.
- Use gloves to remove any leaves sitting near the opening.
- Do not push dirt into the HVAC duct.
Step 8: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

- Use your hand to reinstall the cabin air filter housing cover.
- Press the retaining tab until it clicks into place.
- Confirm the cover is fully seated.
Step 10: Refit the Cowl Cover

- Press the clips down gently until they are secure.
- Use the flat trim removal tool only if needed to guide the edge into place.
Step 11: Final Check
- Use your hands to check that the cowl trim is seated evenly.
- Close the hood securely.
- No torque specification applies because no threaded fasteners are removed for this service.
