📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🔇 Turn off the A/C system and fan before shutting off the engine.
- 🧳 Empty the glove box so you can drop it fully.
- 💡 Use the flashlight to see behind and inside the glove box area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Use your hands with mechanic gloves to open the glove box fully.
- Remove all items so they don’t fall when the glove box drops down.
- Keep items in a small box to stay organized.
Step 2: Unhook the glove box damper cord
- On the right side of the glove box, find the small arm/cord (this is the damper that slows the glove box).
- Use your right hand and gently push the plastic tab on the damper inward, then slide the cord off the glove box hook.
- If it’s tight, use a plastic trim tool to gently pry the clip off.
- Do not pull hard; it can snap.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and drop the glove box
- On both sides of the glove box (left and right), the plastic sides act as “stops” against the dash opening.
- With mechanic gloves on, gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward so they clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box rotate down and hang; it will drop further and expose the area behind it.
- Support it with one hand so it doesn’t slam down.
Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover
- Behind the dropped glove box, look straight ahead with your LED flashlight.
- You will see a rectangular black plastic cover in the HVAC housing (about the size of a small book).
- This is the cabin air filter door.
Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter cover
- On your RAV4, the cover has clips on the left and right edges.
- Use your fingers with mechanic gloves to squeeze or unclip one side at a time and pull the cover straight toward you.
- Set the cover aside somewhere clean.
Step 6: Slide out the old cabin air filter
- Use your hands to pull the old filter straight out toward you.
- Hold it level so dust and leaves don’t fall into the blower area.
- Place the old filter on a shop towel to avoid making a mess.
- Note the direction of the arrows on the old filter.
Step 7: Clean the filter housing area
- Use a shop towel to gently wipe inside the filter slot where you can reach.
- If you see leaves or debris, remove them by hand with mechanic gloves.
- Do not push debris further inside.
Step 8: Prepare the new cabin air filter
- Take the new filter out of its box and plastic wrap.
- Find the airflow arrow printed on the side of the new filter.
- On your RAV4, the correct orientation is typically arrow pointing DOWN (airflow down), because air flows from top to bottom.
- Match orientation with your old filter if unsure.
Step 9: Install the new cabin air filter
- Using your hands, gently slide the new filter into the slot with the airflow arrow pointing down.
- Make sure the filter edges sit flat and fully inside the housing, with no bending or crushing.
- If it resists, pull it back slightly and re-align before pushing it fully in.
Step 10: Reinstall the cabin air filter cover
- Hold the plastic cover you removed earlier.
- Align the cover tabs with the housing openings and push it straight in until both side clips click into place.
- Use your LED flashlight to confirm both sides are fully seated.
Step 11: Raise and reattach the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position using your hands.
- Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward again so the stops go back inside the dash opening, then release.
- On the right side, reattach the damper cord: use your fingers or a plastic trim tool to help slide the cord clip back onto the glove box hook until it clicks.
Step 12: Put items back and test the system
- Return your items to the glove box.
- Start the engine, turn on the A/C fan at different speeds, and check for normal airflow and no unusual noises.
- Sniff: air should smell cleaner over time.
✅ After Repair
- 🌀 Run the fan on medium and change modes (face, feet, defrost) to ensure air flows well from all vents.
- 👃 If you still smell mustiness, it may take a few days for the smell to fade; heavily contaminated systems may need additional cleaning spray.
- 📅 Plan to replace the cabin air filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty areas.
