🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove manuals and loose items by hand.
- Use flashlight to see the right-side “damper” area clearly.
- The glove box damper is a small arm that slows the glove box from dropping.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small damper arm.
- Carefully pop the damper arm off its pin by hand (no tools needed).
- Tip: Pull gently outward, then lift off.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops.”
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
- Use work gloves if the edges feel sharp.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Press the cover’s side tabs and pull it straight off by hand.
- Use safety glasses in case debris falls.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Keep it level as you pull it out to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
- Use flashlight to inspect the filter housing for leaves.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow direction arrow on the new filter.
- Install it with the airflow arrow pointing down (toward the floor) for your Corolla’s typical HVAC layout.
- Slide it in evenly so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by pushing until the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and press inward on the sides again to re-seat the stops.
- Reconnect the glove box damper arm to its pin by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Corolla and run the fan on high for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box.
- If you still smell musty odor, consider cleaning the HVAC intake area and checking for leaves near the cowl.
