🔧 Fusion - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of the cabin air. On your Fusion, the cabin filter is located behind the glove box on the passenger side.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park your Fusion on a level surface and turn the vehicle fully OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Do not turn the vehicle on while the glove box is removed or hanging down.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around plastic clips. Interior trim can crack if forced.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Small flat trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and place the transmission in Park.
  • 🔌 Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the start button area.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box completely so items do not fall out.
  • 💡 Use a flashlight so you can see the filter door clearly behind the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove all contents from the glove box.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the sides and rear of the glove box opening.
  • Put small items in a tray.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper Arm

  • Use the flashlight to locate the small damper arm on the side of the glove box.
  • A damper arm is a small plastic link that slows the glove box when it opens.
  • Use your fingers or a small flat trim tool to gently slide the damper arm off its pin.
  • Do not pry hard. The plastic tab can break.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box.
  • This releases the glove box stops from the dash opening.
  • Slowly lower the glove box downward until it hangs open.
  • Press both sides evenly.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Access Door

  • Use the flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the glove box opening.
  • Use your fingers to release the locking tabs on the cabin filter access door.
  • If the tabs are tight, use the small flat trim tool gently on the tab only.
  • Pull the access door straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Watch the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it fully.
  • The airflow arrow shows the direction air moves through the filter.
  • Keep the dirty side facing up as much as possible so debris does not spill.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the same slot.
  • Match the airflow arrow direction to the old filter orientation.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the housing.
  • Do not crush or fold the filter pleats.

Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Access Door

  • Use your hands to position the cabin filter access door back over the opening.
  • Press until the tabs click into place.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the door is seated evenly on both sides.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to raise the glove box back toward the dash opening.
  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box so the stops pass the dash opening.
  • Release the sides once the glove box is back in its normal position.
  • Use your fingers to reconnect the damper arm onto its pin.

Step 9: Check Glove Box Operation

  • Use your hand to open and close the glove box several times.
  • Make sure it opens smoothly and does not drop suddenly.
  • Confirm the damper arm stays attached.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn your Fusion on and run the HVAC fan at low, medium, and high speeds.
  • ✅ Check that air flows normally from the vents.
  • ✅ Listen for rattles or clicking noises behind the glove box.
  • ✅ If airflow seems weak, turn the vehicle off and recheck that the filter is not folded or installed crooked.
  • ✅ No scan tool, battery registration, or infotainment reset is needed.
