🔧 Fusion - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the cabin air filter on your Fusion helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of the air coming through the vents. The filter is located behind the glove box and can be changed with simple hand tools.

- ⚠️ Do not force the glove box down too far; the plastic hinges and stops can crack.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear when lowering the glove box so it does not pinch you.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Fusion on level ground and shift into Park.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
- 📦 Empty the glove box completely so items do not spill when it is lowered.
- 💡 A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to release clips without scratching interior panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and Open the Glove Box
- Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
- Remove all papers, manuals, and loose items from inside.
- Use a flashlight to look along the sides of the glove box opening.
- Put small items in a cup.
Step 2: Release the Glove Box Stops
- Use your hands to gently push inward on both side walls of the glove box.
- While squeezing the sides inward, lower the glove box past the built-in stops.
- If the plastic feels stiff, use a trim removal tool gently at the side stop area to help guide it inward.
- Do not yank on the glove box; it should lower smoothly once the stops clear the dash opening.
Step 3: Lower the Glove Box
- Use your hands to let the glove box hang downward carefully.
- Use the flashlight to look behind the glove box area.
- The cabin filter access door is a narrow rectangular cover on the HVAC housing behind the glove box.
- The HVAC housing is the plastic air box that directs air through the heater, A/C, and vents.
Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover
- Use your fingers to release the tabs on the cabin filter cover.
- If a tab is tight, use the trim removal tool gently to press the locking tab while pulling the cover outward.
- Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
- No torque spec applies because this cover uses plastic clips, not bolts.
Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
- Use safety glasses because dust or leaves may fall as the filter comes out.
- Look at the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
- On your Fusion, install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the original filter.
- Take a quick photo first.
Step 6: Clean the Filter Slot
- Use a flashlight to inspect the empty filter slot.
- Use gloved fingers to remove any large leaves or debris you can easily reach.
- Do not push debris deeper into the HVAC housing.
- Do not spray cleaner into the filter slot during this basic filter replacement.
Step 7: Install the New Cabin Air Filter
- Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the housing.
- Keep the filter straight so the pleats do not fold over.
- Make sure the airflow arrow matches the direction of the original filter.
- The filter should sit fully inside the housing without sticking out.
Step 8: Reinstall the Cabin Filter Cover
- Use your hands to place the filter cover back onto the HVAC housing.
- Press until the tabs click into place.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the cover is fully seated on both sides.
- No torque spec applies because the cover is retained by clips.
Step 9: Raise and Lock the Glove Box
- Use your hands to raise the glove box back toward the dash opening.
- Push inward slightly on the glove box sides so the stops pass back into position.
- Open and close the glove box once to make sure it moves normally.
- Reload your glove box items after confirming it latches correctly.
✅ After Repair
- 🌬️ Start your Fusion and turn the blower fan on low, medium, and high.
- 👂 Listen for rattling or clicking that could mean the filter cover is not fully seated.
- ✅ Check that airflow from the vents feels normal.
- 🧾 Note the mileage and date so you know when it was replaced.
