Your Corolla’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow—especially if it’s clogged.

- ⚠️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—Corolla glove box parts can crack.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park safely, ignition OFF, and open the passenger door for working space.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Have a trash bag ready for dusty filters.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove all items by hand.
- Use your flashlight to look along the right side for the small damper (a little arm/strap that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side of the glove box, gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
- If it’s tight, use a plastic trim tool (specialty) to carefully pry it off. Small pry, don’t twist hard.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push in on both glove box side walls with your hands to release the stops (the plastic “ears” that limit how far it opens).
- Lower the glove box fully so it hangs down.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular filter cover on the HVAC case.
- Use your flashlight to see the locking tabs.
- Press the tabs by hand and pull the cover off.
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Slide the filter tray/filter straight out by hand.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping dust and leaves.
Step 6: Install the new filter (airflow direction matters)
- Check the new filter for an “AIR FLOW” arrow.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically the arrow points down on the Corolla).
- Slide it fully in by hand until it seats evenly.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Snap the filter cover back on by hand until both tabs click.
- Lift the glove box up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin by hand (use the plastic trim tool (specialty) only if needed).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the fan to medium/high to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculate to make sure the airflow sounds normal.
- If you hear rattling, re-check that the filter cover is fully clipped in.
