🔧 Focus - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the cabin air filter helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of the air coming through your vents. On your Focus, the cabin filter is accessed from the passenger-side footwell area, behind trim near the center console.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park your Focus on a flat surface and turn the ignition fully off before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Use safety glasses because dust and debris may fall when the old filter is removed.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic trim panels; they can crack if pulled at the wrong angle.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

- 🔦 Place a flashlight in the passenger footwell so you can see the filter cover clearly.
- 🧤 Put on gloves and safety glasses before removing the old filter.
- 📌 Note the airflow arrow on the new filter before installation. The arrow shows the direction air travels through the filter.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Passenger Footwell Area
- Use a flashlight to look at the passenger-side lower dash area near the center console.
- Locate the small side trim panel on the center console, next to the passenger’s left foot area.
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry the trim panel away. A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
- Work slowly to avoid broken clips.
Step 2: Remove the Cabin Filter Access Cover
- Use the flashlight to find the narrow rectangular cabin filter access cover behind the trim area.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the retaining screw from the filter access cover, if equipped.
- Pull the access cover off by hand and set it aside.
- No torque spec is required for the small plastic cover screw; reinstall it snug only.
Step 3: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Grip the exposed edge of the old cabin air filter with your fingers.
- Pull the filter straight out slowly. It may need to bend slightly to clear the opening.
- Use the shop vacuum to clean leaves, dust, or loose debris from the filter housing opening.
- Do not push debris deeper into the HVAC box. The HVAC box is the plastic air duct assembly under the dash.
- Check the old filter arrow before tossing it.
Step 4: Install the New Cabin Air Filter
- Look for the airflow arrow printed on the new cabin air filter.
- Slide the new filter into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
- Use both hands to guide the filter so it does not fold over or jam inside the housing.
- If the filter resists, pull it back out and realign it. Do not crush it.
- A seated filter should sit flat.
Step 5: Reinstall the Access Cover
- Place the access cover back over the filter opening by hand.
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall the retaining screw, if equipped.
- Tighten the screw gently until seated. Do not overtighten plastic parts.
- Torque to snug only
Step 6: Reinstall the Passenger-Side Trim Panel
- Line up the plastic clips on the trim panel with their mounting holes.
- Press the trim panel back into place by hand until the clips snap in.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the panel sits flush and does not interfere with the passenger footwell.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Focus and turn the fan to low, medium, and high speeds.
- ✅ Switch between fresh air and recirculation modes to confirm normal airflow.
- ✅ Listen for rattles or whistling from the passenger footwell. If you hear noise, recheck that the filter and cover are seated correctly.
- ✅ Reset your maintenance reminder only if you personally track cabin filter service there; this repair does not require scan tool programming.
