🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

• Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
• Remove all items from the glove box.
• Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm. A damper arm is a small plastic link that slows the glove box as it opens.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper Arm

• Use your fingers to gently slide or pop the damper arm off the small peg on the right side of the glove box.
• Do not pry hard with a tool; the plastic can crack.
• Gentle pressure works best.

Step 3: Release the Glove Box Side Stops

• Use both hands to press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box.
• While squeezing the sides inward, lower the glove box past the built-in stops.
• Let the glove box hang down carefully.
• No bolts are removed, so no torque spec is required for this step.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

• Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the lowered glove box.
• Use your fingers to press the release tabs on the cover.
• Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
• Remember the cover orientation.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

• Use your fingers to pull the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
• Keep the filter level so loose leaves and dust do not spill into the blower area.
• Look at the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it completely.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

• Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the housing.
• Install it with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old filter.
• On your Outback, the airflow direction is typically downward through the HVAC case, so the arrow usually points down.
• Make sure the filter sits flat and does not fold or buckle.
• Do not crush the pleats.

Step 7: Reinstall the Cabin Filter Cover

• Use your hands to align the cabin filter cover with the housing.
• Press the cover into place until the tabs click securely.
• No fasteners are used, so no torque spec is required.

Step 8: Raise the Glove Box and Reconnect the Damper

• Use both hands to lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
• Press the glove box sides inward slightly so the side stops pass back into place.
• Use your fingers to reconnect the damper arm to the small peg on the right side.
• Open and close the glove box once to confirm it moves smoothly.
