🔧 Forester - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter in your Forester is a simple beginner-friendly job. The filter cleans the air coming through the heater and A/C system, so changing it helps improve airflow and reduce dust, pollen, and odors inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working around the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ Do not force the glove box down; the plastic stops and damper arm can break.
  • ⚠️ Keep small items out of the blower opening so they do not fall into the HVAC case.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Forester on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • 🧤 Put on work gloves and safety glasses.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box so items do not spill when it swings down.
  • 💡 Use a flashlight to see the filter door clearly behind the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove all items from inside the glove box.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm.
  • The damper arm is a small plastic support that slows the glove box as it opens.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper Arm

  • Use your fingers to gently slide the damper arm off its mounting pin on the right side of the glove box.
  • If it is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it off the pin.
  • Go slow to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 3: Release the Glove Box Stops

  • Use both hands to squeeze the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
  • This releases the built-in side stops from the dashboard opening.
  • Let the glove box swing downward gently.
  • No bolts need to be removed for normal cabin filter access.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

  • Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the lowered glove box.
  • Use your fingers to press the locking tabs on the filter cover.
  • If a tab is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently release it.
  • Pull the cover straight outward and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • On your Forester, the replacement filter must be installed with the airflow direction matching the original filter orientation.
  • Use a flashlight to check the filter slot for leaves or large debris.
  • Remove loose debris by hand while wearing work gloves.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the housing.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow on the new filter matches the direction of the old filter.
  • Push the filter in evenly so it does not fold or crush.
  • A crushed filter can reduce airflow.

Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover

  • Use your hands to place the cabin filter cover back over the opening.
  • Press the cover until the locking tabs click into place.
  • Gently tug the cover by hand to confirm it is secure.

Step 8: Raise and Reattach the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
  • Squeeze the sides inward again so the glove box stops pass back into the dashboard opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pushing it back onto its mounting pin with your fingers.
  • Open and close the glove box by hand to make sure it moves smoothly.

Step 9: Check HVAC Airflow

  • Start your Forester and turn the blower fan on low, then medium, then high.
  • Listen for rattles or fluttering sounds from behind the glove box.
  • If you hear noise, turn the blower off and recheck that the filter is fully seated and the cover is latched.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the glove box opens and closes normally.
  • ✅ Confirm airflow from the vents is strong and steady.
  • ✅ Set the HVAC system to fresh air and then recirculation to make sure both modes work normally.
  • ✅ Replace the cabin air filter about every 12,000-15,000 miles, or sooner in dusty conditions.
