🔧 Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the cabin air filter on your Highlander is a simple beginner-friendly job. The filter sits behind the glove box and cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Do not force the glove box stops; the plastic can crack if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Keep small items from the glove box away from the passenger footwell so they do not fall behind trim panels.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Open the passenger door fully so you have room to work.
- Empty the glove box before lowering it.
- A cabin air filter has an airflow arrow. On your Highlander, install it with the arrow pointing DOWN.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Remove all contents by hand and set them aside.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm.
- The damper arm is a small plastic support that slows the glove box as it opens.
Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper
- Use your fingers to gently slide the damper arm off the small pin on the right side of the glove box.
- No tool is usually needed. If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently instead of pulling hard.
- Go slow. Plastic clips get brittle.
Step 3: Lower the Glove Box
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box by hand.
- This lets the glove box stops clear the dashboard opening.
- Carefully lower the glove box down toward the floor.
- Do not yank it. The bottom hinges stay attached.
Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Access Cover
- Use your flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the glove box opening.
- Release the plastic tabs by hand and pull the cover straight off.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Slide the old cabin air filter straight out by hand.
- Notice the direction of the airflow arrow before removing it completely.
- Use nitrile gloves if the filter is dirty or dusty.
- Use a shop vacuum with crevice attachment to gently remove leaves or loose debris from the filter slot.
- Do not push the vacuum nozzle deep into the HVAC box.
Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter
- Check the arrow on the new cabin air filter.
- Slide the new filter into the housing with the airflow arrow pointing DOWN.
- Keep the filter flat so it does not fold or bunch up inside the slot.
- If it resists, pull it out and realign it.
Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- Push the cabin filter access cover back into place by hand.
- Make sure both plastic tabs click securely.
- No torque spec applies because there are no screws or bolts for this cover.
Step 8: Raise the Glove Box
- Lift the glove box back upward by hand.
- Press inward on both sides again so the glove box stops pass back into the dashboard opening.
- Let the glove box settle into its normal open position.
Step 9: Reconnect the Damper Arm
- Use your fingers to slide the damper arm back onto the pin on the right side of the glove box.
- Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm it moves smoothly.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Highlander and turn the blower fan on low, then medium, then high.
- Listen for rattles, rubbing, or fluttering sounds from behind the glove box.
- Check airflow from the dash vents.
- If airflow is weak or noisy, turn the system OFF and recheck that the filter is fully seated.
- No scan tool, reset, or infotainment menu step is required.
