🔧 Optima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. Replacing it helps improve airflow and reduces dust, pollen, and odors entering your Optima’s interior.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch off the ignition and climate-control system before starting.
  • 🧤 Lower the glove box gently so its hinges and damper arm are not damaged.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED flashlight
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Optima on level ground, move the shifter to Park, and engage the parking brake.
  • ⏻ Switch off the ignition and remove all items from the glove box.
  • 💡 Use the LED flashlight to look behind the glove box before releasing any retainers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
  • Open the glove box fully and remove its contents.
  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the damper arm on the right side. The damper arm is the small plastic link that lets the glove box open slowly.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove-Box Damper

  • Support the glove box with one hand.
  • Use your gloved fingers to slide the damper arm off its mounting pin on the right side.
  • Do not pull sharply because the plastic arm can crack.

Step 3: Release the Glove-Box Stops

  • Use the LED flashlight to identify the stop tabs at both inner sides of the glove box.
  • Use your gloved fingers to rotate and remove the left and right stop tabs.
  • Hold the glove box as the second stop is removed, then lower it toward the floor.
  • Keep both stops together so they are not lost.

Step 4: Remove the Filter Cover

  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter housing behind the lowered glove box.
  • Use your gloved fingers to squeeze the locking tabs on the filter cover.
  • Pull the cover straight outward and place it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Use your gloved fingers to pull the old filter straight out.
  • Note the direction of the airflow arrow before removing it completely.
  • Keep the dirty filter level to prevent leaves and dust from falling into the blower housing.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Use the LED flashlight to inspect the empty housing and remove loose debris with your gloved fingers.
  • Insert the new cabin air filter with its AIR FLOW arrow pointing downward.
  • Keep the filter pleats straight. Do not crush or fold the filter.
  • The airflow arrow follows air, not filter orientation.

Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover

  • Use your gloved fingers to align the filter cover with the housing.
  • Press the cover inward until both locking tabs click securely into place.
  • Use the LED flashlight to verify that the cover sits evenly.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Raise the glove box with your gloved hands until its side openings align with the stop-tab locations.
  • Reinstall and rotate both glove-box stop tabs until locked.
  • Use your gloved fingers to reconnect the damper arm to its mounting pin on the right side.
  • Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm smooth movement.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Optima and run the blower through every fan speed.
  • 🌬️ Check that airflow is strong and no rattling or rubbing noise comes from behind the glove box.
  • 🔍 If airflow is weak, switch off the blower and verify that the filter is not folded or installed backward.
  • 📅 Inspect the filter about every 12 months or 12,000-15,000 miles. Dusty conditions around Sonīpat may require more frequent replacement.
