🔧 Tahoe - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter sits behind the lower glove box and cleans dust, pollen, and debris from the air entering your Tahoe. Replacement is straightforward, but the glove-box fasteners and plastic filter door must be handled gently.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tahoe on level ground and switch the ignition and climate-control system off.
- 📦 Empty the lower glove box so its contents do not fall out during removal.
- 🔎 Compare the new filter with the old one before installation. Their length, width, and thickness should match.
- 💡 Position a flashlight in the passenger footwell so you can see the glove-box fasteners.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Glove-Box Fasteners
- Open the lower glove box fully.
- Use a 7mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the glove-box retaining screws along the upper and lower edges.
- Place every screw in a small container so none are lost.
- Photograph the screw locations before removal.
Step 2: Remove the Glove-Box Assembly
- Support the glove box with one hand and gently pull it toward the passenger seat.
- If an edge remains caught, use a plastic trim removal tool to release it. A trim tool is a nonmetal pry tool that helps prevent scratches.
- Do not pull hard. If equipped with a glove-box lamp connector, press its locking tab by hand and disconnect it before moving the glove box aside.
Step 3: Open the Cabin-Filter Housing
- Use a flashlight to locate the narrow rectangular filter cover directly behind the glove-box opening.
- Press the locking tabs at the sides of the cover inward by hand.
- Pull the cover straight off without bending its plastic hinges or tabs.
Step 4: Remove the Old Filter
- Observe the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before pulling it out.
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand, keeping it level to avoid spilling debris into the blower housing.
- On your Tahoe, the replacement filter’s AIR FLOW arrow should point downward.
Step 5: Clean the Filter Compartment
- Use a vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose leaves and dust near the opening.
- Keep the vacuum nozzle near the opening. Do not push it deeply into the housing because the blower wheel can be damaged.
- Do not use compressed air; it can drive debris farther into the climate-control system.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
- Hold the new cabin air filter with its AIR FLOW arrow pointing downward.
- Slide it into the housing by hand without crushing or sharply folding the pleats.
- Verify that the filter sits flat and does not extend beyond the housing opening.
Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- Align the filter cover with the housing by hand.
- Press the cover into place until both locking tabs click securely.
- Pull gently on the cover to confirm it is fully latched.
Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box
- Reconnect the glove-box lamp connector by hand if it was disconnected.
- Align the glove-box assembly with the instrument-panel opening and press it evenly into position by hand.
- Start every screw by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 7mm socket, 3-inch extension, and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the glove-box screws evenly to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the screws because the plastic mounting points can crack.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Open and close the glove box to verify smooth movement and proper alignment.
- 💡 Confirm that the glove-box lamp works if its connector was removed.
- 🌬️ Start your Tahoe and operate the blower at each speed. Listen for rubbing, fluttering, or unusual vibration.
- 🔍 If airflow is noisy, switch the blower off and confirm that the filter is flat and the cover is fully latched.
- 📅 Replace the filter approximately every 12,000-15,000 miles, or sooner in dusty conditions.
