🔧 Suburban - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter is located behind the lower glove box. Replacing it improves airflow and helps prevent dust, pollen, and odors from entering the passenger compartment.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before reaching behind the glove box.
  • ⚠️ Do not switch on the blower while the filter cover is removed.
  • ⚠️ Support the glove box as it lowers so its hinges are not damaged.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim-removal tool
  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • HEPA shop vacuum with crevice attachment

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Suburban on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn off the ignition, climate-control system, and blower motor.
  • 📦 Empty the lower glove box so nothing falls out when it is lowered.
  • 🔍 Compare the new filter with the old one before installation. Their dimensions and sealing edges should match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lower the glove box

  • Open the lower glove box fully and support it with one hand.
  • Use your fingers to release the glove-box damper arm from the pin on the right side. The damper arm is the small linkage that makes the glove box open slowly.
  • Press both glove-box sides inward to move the stop tabs past the dashboard opening.
  • If a stop tab is tight, use the plastic trim-removal tool gently. Do not use a metal screwdriver.
  • Allow the glove box to rotate downward carefully.

Step 2: Open the filter compartment

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove-box opening.
  • Use your fingers to release the locking tabs on the filter cover.
  • Pull the cover straight away from the HVAC housing. HVAC means the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.
  • No fasteners are removed, so no torque specification applies.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Wear nitrile work gloves and slowly slide the old filter straight out.
  • Observe the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • Keep the dirty side facing upward to avoid spilling debris into the blower housing.
  • Photograph the old arrow direction first.

Step 4: Clean the filter opening

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check the compartment for leaves or loose dirt.
  • Use the HEPA shop vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose debris near the opening.
  • Do not push the attachment deeply into the housing or contact the blower wheel.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can drive debris farther into the HVAC case.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Hold the new cabin air filter by its reinforced edges.
  • Install it with the printed AIR FLOW arrow pointing downward, matching airflow through the Suburban’s HVAC housing.
  • Slide the filter in evenly. Do not crush or fold the pleats.
  • Confirm the filter sits flat and its sealing edges are fully inside the compartment.

Step 6: Reinstall the filter cover

  • Position the cover over the opening by hand.
  • Engage its locating edge first, then press the opposite side until every locking tab clicks into place.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify there is no gap around the cover.
  • No fasteners are installed, so no torque specification applies.

Step 7: Reinstall the glove box

  • Lift the glove box by hand while pressing its sides inward.
  • Move both stop tabs back through the dashboard opening, then release the sides.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to the pin on the right side by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box slowly to verify smooth operation.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Suburban and run the blower through all speed settings.
  • ✅ Verify airflow comes from the selected vents without scraping, fluttering, or unusual fan noise.
  • ✅ Check that the filter cover remains secure and the glove box closes normally.
  • ✅ No scan-tool reset or infotainment procedure is required.
  • ✅ Inspect the filter every 12 months or sooner in Sonīpat’s dusty conditions.
