🔧 Impala - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box and removes dust, pollen, and debris from air entering the passenger compartment. Replacing it can improve airflow and reduce musty odors from the vents.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch off the ignition and climate-control system before starting.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves because the old filter may contain dust, pollen, and insects.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box before lowering it to prevent items from falling.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim-removal tool
  • LED flashlight
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Impala on level ground, shift into Park, and switch off the ignition.
  • 📦 Open the glove box and remove all its contents.
  • 💨 Set the climate-control fan to Off. No infotainment menu or scan tool is required.
  • 🔎 Compare the new and old filters before installation. Their outside dimensions should match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Release the Glove Box Damper

  • Open the glove box fully and use the LED flashlight to locate the small damper arm on the right side.
  • The damper is the small plastic link that lets the glove box lower slowly.
  • Support the glove box with one hand. Use the plastic trim-removal tool to carefully unhook the damper arm from its attachment point.
  • Do not force or sharply bend the plastic arm.

Step 2: Lower the Glove Box

  • With both hands, press the upper left and right sides of the glove box inward until its stop tabs clear the dashboard opening.
  • Slowly rotate the glove box downward. It can remain attached at its lower hinges.
  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter access cover behind the glove box.
  • Press one side inward at a time.

Step 3: Remove the Filter Access Cover

  • Use your fingers to release the locking tabs on the filter access cover.
  • If a tab is difficult to release, gently press it with the plastic trim-removal tool.
  • Pull the cover straight outward and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Put on the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your fingers to slide the old filter straight out. Keep it level so loose debris does not fall into the blower housing.
  • Note the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • Use the LED flashlight to inspect the empty housing. Remove loose leaves by hand only; do not push debris deeper into the opening.

Step 5: Install the New Filter

  • Check the new filter for an airflow arrow. Install it in the same direction as the original filter; on this Impala, the airflow arrow normally points downward.
  • Use both hands to slide the filter evenly into the housing without crushing or folding its pleats.
  • Make sure the filter sits completely inside the housing and its edges are not pinched.
  • Airflow arrows show air movement, not filter orientation.

Step 6: Reinstall the Access Cover

  • Position the filter access cover over the opening using both hands.
  • Engage its locating edge, then press the cover until each locking tab clicks into place.
  • Gently pull on the cover with your fingers to confirm it is secure.

Step 7: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Lift the glove box while pressing its upper sides inward with both hands.
  • Guide the stop tabs back through the dashboard opening, then release the sides.
  • Use your fingers or the plastic trim-removal tool to reconnect the damper arm on the right side.
  • Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm that it lowers smoothly and latches securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Impala and run the climate-control fan through all speed settings.
  • 👂 Listen for rubbing, fluttering, or unusual blower noise. If present, switch the fan off and confirm the filter is seated flat.
  • 💨 Check that airflow from the vents is steady and that the access cover remains secure.
  • 📅 Inspect the filter about every 12 months or 15,000-22,500 km. Sonīpat's dusty conditions may require more frequent replacement.
