📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Sierra 1500 on level ground and shift into Park.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition off and remove everything from the lower glove box.
- 🌬️ Turn the blower off so loose debris is not pulled into the HVAC housing.
- 💡 Position an LED flashlight so you can see behind the glove box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Put on nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
- Open the lower glove box by hand and remove all stored items.
- Use the LED flashlight to locate the glove-box damper on the right side. The damper is the small arm that makes the glove box open slowly.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove-box damper
- Support the glove box with one hand.
- Use the small plastic trim-removal tool to gently release the damper arm from its mounting pin.
- Do not pull hard or twist the damper arm.
- Keep light pressure on the glove box.
Step 3: Lower the glove box
- Press both glove-box side walls inward by hand so the molded stops clear the dashboard opening.
- Carefully rotate the glove box downward until the cabin-filter housing is visible.
- Leave the lower glove-box hinges attached.
Step 4: Remove the filter access cover
- Use the LED flashlight to identify the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove box.
- Release the cover retaining tabs by hand. Use the small plastic trim-removal tool only if a tab is difficult to press.
- Pull the cover straight away from the housing.
- No fasteners are removed, so there is no torque specification.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Note the airflow-arrow direction printed on the old filter before moving it.
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand, keeping it level to avoid spilling debris.
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the empty housing.
- Remove loose leaves by hand while wearing nitrile work gloves. Do not push debris deeper into the blower housing.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow printed on the new cabin air filter.
- Insert the filter by hand with the airflow arrow pointing downward.
- Slide it fully into the housing without crushing or folding the filter media.
- Never force the filter into place.
Step 7: Reinstall the access cover
- Align the filter cover with the housing by hand.
- Press the cover evenly until every retaining tab clicks into place.
- Use the LED flashlight to confirm the cover sits flush and has no visible gaps.
- No bolts are used, so no torque specification applies.
Step 8: Reinstall the glove box
- Raise the glove box by hand while pressing both side walls inward.
- Move the molded stops past the dashboard opening, then release the side walls.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its mounting pin by hand. Use the small plastic trim-removal tool to guide it if needed.
- Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm smooth movement.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Sierra 1500 and operate the blower at each speed.
- 👂 Listen for rattling, fluttering, or scraping behind the glove box.
- 🌬️ Confirm air flows normally from the vents without a musty odor.
- 🔍 If airflow is restricted, switch the blower off and verify the filter is not folded or installed backward.
- 🗓️ Inspect the filter about every 12 months or 15,000 miles, and sooner in dusty conditions.
