🔧 Sentra - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter is behind the passenger-side lower dashboard, next to the center console. Replacing it improves airflow and helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of your Sentra’s interior.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and keep the climate-control fan off.
- 🧤 Wear gloves because the old filter may contain dust and allergens.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
- 🛑 Do not reach toward electrical connectors or pull on dashboard wiring.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- LED flashlight
- Small plastic trim-removal tool

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Sentra on level ground, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- 💺 Slide the front passenger seat fully rearward to create working room.
- 🧹 Remove the passenger floor mat and loose objects from the footwell.
- 🌬️ Set the climate-control fan to off. No infotainment menu or scan tool is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Filter Housing
- 🔦 Kneel beside the open front passenger door and use the LED flashlight to look beneath the glove box.
- Look toward the center console for a narrow, vertical filter cover on the HVAC housing. HVAC means the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.
- The glove box does not normally need to be removed on your Sentra.
Step 2: Remove the Filter Cover
- 🧤 Use your nitrile work gloves to release the retaining tab on the narrow filter cover.
- If the tab is difficult to release, gently press it with the small plastic trim-removal tool. This is a nonmetal tool that helps prevent scratches.
- Pull the cover away from the HVAC housing and note how its lower locating tab fits into place.
- No fasteners are used, so there is no torque specification.
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
- 🗑️ Use your nitrile work gloves to grasp the exposed edge of the old filter.
- Compress the filter slightly and pull it sideways and downward through the narrow opening.
- Remove it slowly to avoid spilling leaves and dust into the footwell.
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the empty housing. Do not push debris farther inside.
- Photograph the old filter orientation first.
Step 4: Check the New Filter Direction
- 🔍 Compare the new filter with the old one using the LED flashlight. Their length, width, and thickness should match.
- If the new filter is marked with an UP arrow, install that arrow pointing upward.
- If it has only an AIR FLOW arrow, match the direction shown on the removed filter or the filter-housing marking.
- Do not treat an UP arrow as an airflow arrow; they have different meanings.
Step 5: Install the New Filter
- 🌬️ Use your nitrile work gloves to gently compress the sides of the new cabin air filter.
- Guide it through the narrow housing opening without tearing or permanently crushing the pleats.
- Use the LED flashlight to confirm the filter expands fully inside the housing and does not protrude from the opening.
- Never force the filter into place.
Step 6: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- 🔒 Use your nitrile work gloves to engage the cover’s lower locating tab first.
- Press the upper portion inward until the retaining tab clicks securely into place.
- Use the LED flashlight to verify the cover sits flush around its edges.
- No fasteners are used, so there is no torque specification.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Sentra and operate the fan at each speed.
- 👂 Listen for fluttering, rattling, or scraping noises. These can indicate a folded filter or an unsecured cover.
- 🌬️ Confirm that airflow comes smoothly from the selected vents.
- 📅 Inspect the filter about every 12 months or 15,000 miles. Dusty conditions may require more frequent replacement.
