🔧 Sienna - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter is behind the glove box. Replacing it improves airflow and helps remove dust, pollen, and odors from the air entering your Sienna.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before lowering the glove box.
  • 🧤 Do not force the glove box stops or damper arm; the plastic can crack.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED flashlight
  • HEPA-filter shop vacuum with crevice nozzle
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚐 Park your Sienna on level ground, shift to Park, and turn off the ignition.
  • 📦 Remove everything from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • 🌬️ Turn the climate-control fan off.
  • 🔍 Compare the new filter with the old one before installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Use the LED flashlight to inspect the right side of the open glove box.
  • Locate the small damper arm attached to the glove box. The damper is the plastic arm that lets the door open slowly.

Step 2: Disconnect the Glove Box Damper

  • Support the glove box with one hand.
  • Use your fingers to slide the damper arm off its mounting pin on the right side.
  • Do not pry it with a metal tool.
  • Gently wiggle the arm while pulling outward.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box

  • Press both glove box side walls inward with your hands.
  • Move the molded stops past the dashboard opening.
  • Carefully lower the glove box toward the floor. It does not need to be fully removed.

Step 4: Remove the Filter Access Cover

  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove box.
  • Press the cover’s locking tabs with your fingers and pull the cover straight outward.
  • Note the cover’s installed direction before setting it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • Wear nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
  • Observe the arrow or orientation marking before removing it completely.
  • Use the HEPA-filter shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove loose leaves from the housing opening.
  • Do not push the vacuum nozzle deeply into the HVAC housing.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Slide the new cabin air filter evenly into the housing without crushing its pleats.
  • If the replacement filter is marked AIR FLOW, point the arrow downward.
  • If it is marked only UP, point the arrow upward.
  • Confirm the filter sits flat and does not protrude from the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the Access Cover

  • Position the filter cover in its original direction.
  • Press it inward by hand until both locking tabs click securely.
  • Lightly pull on the cover to confirm it is latched.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Raise the glove box and squeeze both side walls inward by hand.
  • Guide the molded stops back through the dashboard opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to its mounting pin by pressing it into place with your fingers.
  • Open and close the glove box slowly to verify smooth operation.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Sienna and operate the climate-control fan at each speed.
  • 👂 Listen for fluttering or rubbing noises, which can indicate a crooked filter.
  • 🌬️ Confirm that airflow from the vents is steady.
  • 📅 Inspect the filter about every 12 months or 10,000-15,000 miles, and more often in dusty conditions.
