📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Ranger on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle.
• ⏱️ Wait at least 2 minutes before disconnecting the battery so vehicle modules can go to sleep.
• 🔌 If using a battery memory saver, plug it in before disconnecting the battery. A memory saver supplies low power to preserve radio and module settings.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

• Use the hood release inside the cabin, then open the hood and support it securely.
• The battery is located in the engine bay on the passenger-side area.
• Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
• Take a photo before disconnecting anything.

Step 2: Connect the Memory Saver if Used

• Use the battery memory saver by connecting it according to the tool instructions.
• A memory saver helps keep basic electronic settings while the main battery is disconnected.
• Do not turn the ignition on while the memory saver is connected.

Step 3: Remove the Negative Battery Cable

• Find the negative terminal marked with a minus sign.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
• Lift the negative cable off the battery post.
• If the cable is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A battery terminal puller gently lifts the clamp without twisting or damaging the post.
• Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.

Step 4: Remove the Positive Battery Cable

• Open the protective cover on the positive terminal marked with a plus sign.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
• Lift the positive cable off the battery post.
• If needed, use the battery terminal puller to remove the clamp without prying.
• Keep the positive cable away from metal parts.

Step 5: Remove the Battery Hold-Down

• Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down fastener.
• Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside where it will not be lost.
• The hold-down keeps the battery from moving while driving.

Step 6: Remove the Old Battery

• Use a battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
• Keep the battery upright at all times.
• Place the old battery on cardboard or another stable surface.
• Batteries are heavier than they look.

Step 7: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends

• Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
• Use battery terminal cleaning pads to wipe the tray and nearby cable ends.
• If you see white or green crusty buildup, that is corrosion. Corrosion can block electrical flow and cause starting problems.
• Do not let cleaning debris fall into open electrical connectors.

Step 8: Install the New Battery

• Use the battery carrier strap to lower the new battery into the tray.
• Make sure the positive and negative posts are oriented the same way as the old battery.
• Make sure the battery sits flat in the tray.

Step 9: Reinstall the Battery Hold-Down

• Install the hold-down bracket by hand first so the fastener does not cross-thread.
• Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to tighten the hold-down fastener.
• Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
• Do not overtighten because the battery case can crack.

Step 10: Connect the Positive Battery Cable

• Install the positive cable onto the positive battery post first.
• Push the clamp fully down on the post.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp nut.
• Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs)
• Close the positive terminal cover.

Step 11: Connect the Negative Battery Cable

• Install the negative cable onto the negative battery post last.
• Push the clamp fully down on the post.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp nut.
• Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs)
• Remove the battery memory saver if used.

Step 12: Apply Terminal Protectant

• Use battery terminal protectant on the installed cable clamps and exposed terminal areas.
• Do not spray protectant between the battery post and cable clamp before tightening, because it can reduce electrical contact.

Step 13: Reset the Battery Monitoring System

• Use a scan tool with Ford battery monitoring reset function and connect it to the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
• Select the Ford battery monitoring system reset or battery replacement reset function.
• Follow the scan tool prompts until the reset is completed.
• This tells your Ranger that a new battery is installed so the charging system does not treat it like the old battery.

Step 14: Optional Manual Battery Monitoring Reset

• If a scan tool is not available, try the Ford manual reset sequence from the driver seat.
• Use the key to switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
• Use the headlight switch to flash the high beams 5 times.
• Use the brake pedal and press it 3 times.
• Watch for the battery warning light to flash after several seconds, which indicates the reset was accepted.
• If the light does not flash, use a scan tool to complete the reset.
