🔧 Impala - Battery Replacement
On your Impala, the 12V battery is mounted in the trunk area. You’ll remove the trunk-side access cover, disconnect the cables (negative first), swap the battery, then reconnect (positive first) to restore power safely.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF, remove key/fob from the car, and keep it at least 10+ feet away so modules go to sleep.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses—battery acid is corrosive and batteries are heavy.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch the battery positive and any metal body part at the same time.
- ⚠️ If your Impala has a sensor on the negative cable, don’t pry or twist on it.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Make sure everything is off (lights, HVAC, radio). Close doors if possible so interior lights don’t stay on.
- 🧠 Expect memory resets: clock/time, trip data, and some settings may reset after battery replacement.
- 🧰 A trim clip removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop interior push-clips without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery in the trunk
- Open the trunk and remove the floor panel using your hands.
- Use a work light so you can clearly see the right-side trunk panel area.
- Remove the battery access cover/panel on the trunk side using a trim clip removal tool (pop the push-clips straight out).
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 3" extension to loosen the negative terminal bolt.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery and position it so it cannot spring back onto the terminal. Wrap with a glove if needed.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal bolt.
- Lift the positive cable off and move it safely aside.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 3" extension to remove the hold-down bolt and clamp.
- Set the clamp and bolt aside where they won’t get lost.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Lift the battery straight up and out (it’s heavy—use your legs, not your back).
Step 6: Clean the terminals and prep the new battery
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean any corrosion from the cable ends.
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion washers onto the battery posts.
- Verify the new battery orientation matches the old one so cables reach without stretching.
Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same position as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down clamp and bolt using a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (foot-pound, 10-80 ft-lb): Torque to 15 ft-lbs (20 N·m).
Step 8: Reconnect the positive (+) cable first
- Install the positive cable onto the terminal.
- Tighten using a 10mm socket, then finalize with a torque wrench (inch-pound, 0-200 in-lb): Torque to 115 in-lbs (13 N·m).
- Apply battery terminal protectant spray to reduce future corrosion.
Step 9: Reconnect the negative (-) cable last
- Install the negative cable onto the terminal.
- Tighten using a 10mm socket, then finalize with a torque wrench (inch-pound, 0-200 in-lb): Torque to 115 in-lbs (13 N·m).
- Apply battery terminal protectant spray.
Step 10: Reinstall trunk panels
- Reinstall the battery access cover/panel and push-clips using your hands (use the trim clip removal tool only if you need help aligning clips).
- Reinstall the trunk floor panel.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Impala and confirm it cranks normally and the charging system light is off.
- ✅ Reset the clock and re-save radio presets as needed.
- ✅ If you see warning messages that don’t clear after a short drive, shut the car off for 2 minutes, restart, and recheck.
- ✅ Make sure the trunk light turns off and the trunk trim is fully clipped back in.
