🔧 Expedition - Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12-volt battery on your Expedition is a beginner-friendly job, but it must be done carefully because the battery is heavy and the terminals can spark if handled incorrectly. Your Expedition uses battery monitoring, so after replacement the Battery Monitoring System should be reset so charging works correctly.

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves because car batteries contain acid and can release explosive gas.
  • ⚠️ Always remove the negative battery cable first and reconnect it last to reduce spark risk.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or the positive terminal and body metal at the same time.
  • ⚠️ The battery is heavy. Lift with both hands and keep it upright.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect may erase some learned settings, clock memory, and one-touch window calibration.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle while working so modules stay asleep.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Expedition on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition off and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away from the vehicle.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting the battery so vehicle modules can go to sleep.
  • 🧠 A memory saver is optional. A memory saver is a small power supply that plugs into the OBD-II port to help preserve radio and module memory while the battery is disconnected.
  • 📍 The battery is located under the hood on the passenger side, near the firewall.
  • 🔋 Your Expedition’s Battery Monitoring System should be reset after replacement using the vehicle switch sequence or a scan tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

  • Use the hood release inside the cabin, then open the hood and secure it fully.
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
  • Find the battery on the passenger side rear area of the engine bay.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 2: Optional Memory Saver Setup

  • Use a battery memory saver 12V OBD-II if you want to help preserve vehicle settings.
  • Plug it into the OBD-II port under the driver side dash before disconnecting the battery.
  • Follow the memory saver instructions exactly.

Step 3: Remove the Negative Battery Cable

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • The negative terminal is marked with a minus symbol (-) and usually has a black cable.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post.
  • If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A terminal puller gently lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery.

Step 4: Remove the Positive Battery Cable

  • Flip open the red protective cover on the positive terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • The positive terminal is marked with a plus symbol (+) and usually has a red cover.
  • Lift the positive cable off the battery post.
  • Do not let the wrench touch body metal while it is on the positive terminal.

Step 5: Remove the Battery Hold-Down

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down bolt and clamp at the base of the battery.
  • Set the bolt and clamp aside where they will not fall into the engine bay.
  • Torque on installation: 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the Old Battery

  • Use a battery lifting strap or the battery’s built-in handle to lift the old battery straight up.
  • Keep the battery upright at all times.
  • Place it on the ground carefully. Do not tip it over.
  • Batteries are heavier than they look.

Step 7: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both battery cable clamps.
  • Use the same brush to clean any corrosion from the battery tray area.
  • If corrosion is heavy, avoid breathing dust and keep it away from your eyes.

Step 8: Install the New Battery

  • Use a battery lifting strap to lower the new 12V AGM battery into the tray.
  • Make sure the positive and negative posts are on the same sides as the old battery.
  • Install the battery hold-down clamp using the 8mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension.
  • Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)

Step 9: Reconnect the Positive Cable First

  • Place one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer over the positive battery post.
  • Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive post.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to tighten the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs)
  • Close the red protective cover.

Step 10: Reconnect the Negative Cable Last

  • Place one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer over the negative battery post.
  • Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative post.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to tighten the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs)
  • A small spark during final connection can be normal, but there should not be repeated arcing.

Step 11: Protect the Terminals

  • Use battery terminal protectant spray on both terminal connections after they are tight.
  • Do not spray before tightening because the clamps need clean metal contact.

Step 12: Check Battery Voltage

  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
  • Touch the red meter lead to the positive terminal and the black meter lead to the negative terminal.
  • A healthy fully charged battery should read about 12.4-12.8 volts with the engine off.
  • Start the engine and check again. Charging voltage should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts.

Step 13: Reset the Battery Monitoring System

  • Use this Ford switch sequence after the new battery is installed.
  • Close all doors and switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the headlamp switch and press the brake pedal in this order: flash the high beams 5 times, then press and release the brake pedal 3 times.
  • Watch the battery warning light on the instrument cluster. It should flash to confirm the reset.
  • If the light does not flash, use a compatible scan tool with Ford Battery Monitoring System reset capability.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Expedition and make sure it cranks normally.
  • ✅ Check that the battery terminals do not move by gently trying to twist each cable by hand.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and any radio presets if needed.
  • ✅ Relearn the power windows if auto-up/down does not work: fully close the window, hold the switch up for 2 seconds, fully open it, then hold down for 2 seconds.
  • ✅ Drive normally for 10-15 minutes so modules can relearn idle and charging behavior.
  • ✅ Recycle the old battery at an auto parts store or battery recycler. Do not throw it in household trash.
