🔋 Battery - Replacement

Your Corolla uses a standard 12-volt battery, so this job is a straightforward swap. The main goals are to keep memory loss to a minimum, remove the terminals in the right order, and secure the new battery correctly so it does not move while driving.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and keep all doors closed during the swap.
  • Use eye protection and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Remove the negative cable first and install it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery posts or any metal body part at the same time.
  • Your Corolla does not require high-voltage battery service for this repair.
  • If your battery is under a hold-down clamp, make sure it is reinstalled tightly so the battery cannot shift.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Battery carrier strap
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protection spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the ignition is off and the key/fob is away from the vehicle.
  • Save radio presets and any settings you want to restore later.
  • If your car has an automatic window or sunroof memory feature, expect to reset it after battery replacement.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the battery

  • Release the hood and support it fully.
  • Locate the battery in the engine bay on your Corolla.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the cable off the negative post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Negative off first.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Lift the cable off the positive post and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use the 12mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
  • Keep all bolts and brackets together so nothing gets lost.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Use a battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Battery is heavy, so lift with both hands and keep it upright.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use the battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends if needed.
  • Wipe the battery tray clean so the new battery sits flat.
  • A clean connection lasts longer.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray in the same direction as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down hardware with the 12mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) if your hold-down uses a standard clamp bolt.

Step 8: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable last and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for typical terminal clamp snugness; do not overtighten.

Step 9: Protect the terminals

  • Apply battery terminal protection spray to the terminal connections.
  • Make sure both clamps are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check for warning lights on the dash.
  • Reset the clock, radio presets, and any personal settings.
  • If the power windows act odd, run them fully down and fully up once to relearn the limit.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹8,000-₹16,000 (parts + labor)
