🔧 Battery - Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Equinox is a straightforward job, but you want to keep power loss clean and avoid shorting the terminals. The new battery should be installed with the correct group size and secure hold-down so it cannot move while driving.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves; battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or the body at the same time.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • Memory settings may be lost when power is disconnected.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have the radio code or saved settings if needed.
  • Note: Battery location is assumed to be the standard under-hood battery setup on your Equinox.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Prepare the vehicle

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery.
  • Keep metal tools away from both terminals.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it clear of the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the battery hold-down hardware.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out.
  • It is heavy, so use both hands.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same orientation as the original.
  • Install the hold-down bracket.
  • Use the 13mm socket to tighten the hold-down securely. Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable last and tighten it with the 10mm wrench.
  • Make sure both clamps are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.

Step 8: Final check

  • Close the hood and start the vehicle.
  • Check for warning lights and make sure the engine starts normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset your clock, radio presets, and memory settings if needed.
  • Test the headlights, wipers, and accessories.
  • If the battery warning light stays on, have the charging system checked.
