🔧 Wrangler - Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Wrangler is a beginner-friendly job. The battery sits under the hood on the passenger side and is held in place by a top hold-down bracket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Car batteries contain acid and can spark if handled incorrectly.
  • ⚠️ Always remove the negative cable first and reconnect it last. This helps prevent accidental short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Do not let tools touch both battery terminals or the positive terminal and metal body at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Keep open flames and cigarettes away from the battery area.
  • ⚠️ The radio clock and some learned settings may reset after battery disconnection.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch
  • Battery terminal cleaner brush
  • Battery carrier strap
  • Torque wrench, inch-pound
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion washers - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • 🔑 Remove the key from the ignition and keep it away from the vehicle while working.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 2 minutes after key-off before disconnecting the battery so vehicle modules can power down.
  • 🧠 A battery carrier strap is a lifting handle that clips to the battery posts to help you lift the heavy battery safely.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a specific tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

  • Use the hood release inside your Wrangler, then open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • The battery is on the passenger side of the engine bay near the firewall.
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
  • Take a photo before removing cables.

Step 2: Remove the Negative Battery Cable

  • Find the negative terminal marked with a minus sign - and usually connected to a black cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.

Step 3: Remove the Positive Battery Cable

  • Find the positive terminal marked with a plus sign + and usually covered by a red protective cover.
  • Open the red cover by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off the battery post and move it aside.
  • Do not let the positive cable touch any metal part of the body or engine.

Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down Bracket

  • The hold-down bracket keeps the battery from moving while driving.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the battery hold-down bolt.
  • Lift the hold-down bracket out and set it aside.
  • Do not lose the hold-down hardware.

Step 5: Remove the Old Battery

  • Attach the battery carrier strap to the battery posts if available.
  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray using both hands.
  • Keep the battery upright. Do not tip it over.
  • Set the old battery on the ground in a safe, upright position.

Step 6: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends

  • Use a battery terminal cleaner brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
  • Use the battery terminal cleaner brush to clean light corrosion from the battery tray area.
  • If you see white or blue-green powder, avoid touching it with bare hands because it can irritate skin.
  • Make sure the tray is dry and free of loose debris before installing the new battery.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  • Use the battery carrier strap to lower the new battery into the tray.
  • Make sure the positive post is on the same side as the positive cable.
  • The battery must sit flat in the tray and not rock side to side.
  • Install the anti-corrosion washers over the battery posts by hand if included.

Step 8: Reinstall the Battery Hold-Down

  • Place the hold-down bracket back over the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and torque wrench, inch-pound to tighten the hold-down bolt.
  • Torque to 11 Nm (95 in-lbs).
  • Check that the battery cannot slide or lift.

Step 9: Connect the Positive Battery Cable

  • Place the positive cable clamp onto the positive battery post.
  • Push it fully down so it sits low on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench, inch-pound to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (45 in-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover by hand.

Step 10: Connect the Negative Battery Cable

  • Place the negative cable clamp onto the negative battery post.
  • Push it fully down so it sits low on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench, inch-pound to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (45 in-lbs).
  • Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray over both terminals.

Step 11: Start and Check Operation

  • Start your Wrangler and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Use your eyes to check that the battery cables are not loose or moving.
  • Use your hands carefully to confirm the hold-down is secure, but keep hands clear of belts and fans.
  • Close the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Set the clock if it reset after the battery was disconnected.
  • ✅ Drive normally for a few miles while the idle and transmission learning values stabilize.
  • ✅ If the check engine light stays on after installation, scan for codes before replacing more parts.
  • ✅ Recycle the old battery at a parts store, recycling center, or battery seller. Do not throw it in household trash.
