🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open The Hood And Locate The Battery
- Use your hands to release the hood latch and support the hood securely.
- The battery is in the engine bay near the front corner on the driver side.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
Step 2: Connect The Memory Saver If Using One
- Use the digital memory saver OBD-II 12V and plug it into the OBD-II port under the driver-side dash.
- Confirm the memory saver shows power before removing battery cables.
- Tip: This step is optional but helpful.
Step 3: Remove The Negative Battery Cable
- Find the negative terminal marked with a minus sign -.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the cable off the battery post by hand.
- If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty). A terminal puller gently lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
Step 4: Remove The Positive Battery Cable
- Open the red protective cover over the positive terminal marked with a plus sign +.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the cable off the battery post by hand.
- If it is stuck, use the battery terminal puller (specialty).
- Keep the positive cable from touching metal parts.
Step 5: Remove The Battery Hold-Down Bracket
- The hold-down bracket is the metal clamp that keeps the battery from moving.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to loosen and remove the hold-down nuts.
- Remove the upper hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Do not lose the J-hooks; they are the long hooked rods that secure the bracket.
Step 6: Remove The Old Battery
- Use both hands to lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
- Keep the battery level while removing it.
- Place the old battery on cardboard or a stable surface, not on painted body panels.
- Tip: Batteries are heavier than they look.
Step 7: Clean The Battery Cable Ends And Tray
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.

Step 9: Reinstall The Hold-Down Bracket
- Set the hold-down bracket back over the battery.
- Install the J-hooks into their original holes by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the hold-down nuts evenly.
- Torque to 4.5 Nm (40 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten; the battery case can crack.
Step 10: Connect The Positive Cable First
- Install the positive cable onto the positive battery post marked +.
- Push the clamp fully down onto the post by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
- Close the red positive terminal cover.
Step 11: Connect The Negative Cable Last
- Install the negative cable onto the negative battery post marked -.
- Push the clamp fully down onto the post by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
- A small spark can happen when reconnecting; this is usually normal.
Step 12: Add Corrosion Protection
- Install the battery terminal anti-corrosion protectors over the battery posts if they fit under the cable clamps.
- Use battery terminal protectant spray lightly on the finished cable connections.
- Do not spray inside open electrical connectors.
Step 13: Remove The Memory Saver
- If used, unplug the digital memory saver OBD-II 12V from the OBD-II port.
- Use your hands to close the driver door and verify interior lights turn off normally.

- ✅ Start your Outback and confirm it cranks normally.
- ✅ Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
