🔧 Trax - Battery Replacement
The battery is located under the hood, beneath its protective cover. Replacement involves disconnecting the negative terminal first, removing the hold-down clamp, and installing a matching AGM battery.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition completely off and keep the key away from your Trax.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. This reduces the chance of an electrical short.
- ⚠️ Never allow a tool to touch the positive terminal and any metal body part simultaneously.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and acid-resistant gloves. Automotive batteries contain corrosive acid and can release explosive gas.
- ⚠️ Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
- ⚠️ The battery is heavy. Use a lifting strap and keep it upright.
- ⚠️ Do not bypass or damage the battery current sensor attached to the negative cable.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 150mm socket extension
- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 2-25 Nm torque wrench
- Nylon trim-removal tool
- Battery terminal cleaning brush
- Battery lifting strap (specialty)
- Digital multimeter rated for 20 volts DC
- Acid-resistant mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- H5/Group 47 AGM 12-volt battery - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1
Use an AGM battery with the same physical size, terminal orientation, and at least the cold-cranking rating printed on the original battery. AGM means “absorbed glass mat,” a sealed battery design required when originally equipped.
📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your Trax on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
- 🔑 Switch off the ignition, lights, climate control, and all accessories. Remove the key from the vehicle and wait at least two minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- 🪟 Lower the driver’s window so you cannot accidentally become locked out.
- 📻 Save any preferred radio settings. Some clock, window, and infotainment settings may reset when power is removed.
- 🔋 No battery registration is normally required after replacement, but the replacement must match the original battery technology and capacity.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Battery Compartment
- Put on the acid-resistant mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool to release the battery-cover retaining tabs without snapping them.
- Lift the cover away with your gloved hands and note how the cables are routed.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Terminal
- Identify the negative terminal marked “−” and connected to the black cable.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp straight off with your gloved hands. Move it aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- Do not remove or pry against the battery current sensor fitted around the negative cable.
Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Terminal
- Open the red positive-terminal cover with the nylon trim-removal tool.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp from the positive post with your gloved hands and position it away from surrounding metal.
- Keep loose tools away from both battery posts.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down
- Locate the hold-down clamp at the bottom edge of the battery. The hold-down prevents the battery from moving while driving.
- Use the 13mm socket, 150mm extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and clamp.
- Place the bolt and clamp somewhere clean so they cannot fall into the engine compartment.
Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
- Fit the battery lifting strap securely around the battery.
- Use the lifting strap and acid-resistant mechanic gloves to lift the battery straight upward. Keep it upright and avoid pulling on any cables.
- Inspect the battery tray for corrosion, cracks, or trapped debris.
- Lift with your legs, not your back.
Step 6: Prepare the New Battery
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside surfaces of both cable clamps.
- Compare the old and new batteries using your gloved hands. Confirm that the case dimensions, positive-post location, and negative-post location match.
- If the original battery has a vent connection, transfer the vent elbow with your gloved hands and connect the vehicle’s vent tube to the new battery. Seal any unused vent opening with the plug supplied with the battery.
Step 7: Install and Secure the New Battery
- Use the battery lifting strap to lower the new battery fully into the tray with the terminals in the original orientation.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and does not pinch any wiring.
- Reinstall the lower hold-down clamp and bolt using the 13mm socket, 150mm extension, and 2-25 Nm torque wrench.
- Torque the battery hold-down bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Push the battery gently with your gloved hands. It must not slide or rock.
Step 8: Connect the Positive Terminal
- Push the positive clamp completely down onto the positive post using your gloved hands.
- Tighten the positive clamp nut using the 10mm socket and 2-25 Nm torque wrench.
- Torque the positive terminal clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant and close the red protective cover using your gloved hands.
Step 9: Connect the Negative Terminal
- Push the negative clamp completely down onto the negative post using your gloved hands.
- Tighten the negative clamp nut using the 10mm socket and 2-25 Nm torque wrench.
- Torque the negative terminal clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant without coating the clamp’s contact surface.
Step 10: Reinstall the Battery Cover
- Position the battery cover with your gloved hands, making sure it does not trap either cable.
- Press each retaining tab into place using your gloved hands. Use the nylon trim-removal tool only if a tab needs gentle alignment.
Step 11: Verify Battery Voltage
- Set the digital multimeter to 20 volts DC and place its red probe on the positive terminal and black probe on the negative terminal.
- With the engine off, a fully charged battery should read approximately 12.6 volts.
- Start the engine and check again with the digital multimeter. Charging voltage will normally vary because your Trax uses computer-controlled charging, but it should generally remain near 13.5-15.0 volts when charging is commanded.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm that your Trax starts normally and that no battery or charging-system warning remains illuminated.
- ✅ Set the clock and restore any lost radio or infotainment preferences.
- ✅ If automatic window operation is lost, close the window fully and hold the switch in the upward position for approximately two seconds. Then open it fully and repeat if needed.
- ✅ Allow the engine to idle briefly while the control modules relearn their settings. A slightly different idle immediately after reconnecting can be normal.
- ✅ Have the old battery recycled through a battery retailer or authorized recycling center. Never place it in household waste.
