🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and inspect the battery

• Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment.

• Check for swollen sides, cracks, leakage, or heavy corrosion. Stop if the case is leaking.

Step 2: Remove the negative terminal

• Identify the terminal marked minus or covered by the black cable.
• Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
• Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the post.
• Move the cable aside where it cannot spring back onto the battery.
• Negative off first prevents expensive sparks.

Step 3: Remove the positive terminal connections

• Open or move the red positive-terminal cover.
• Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
• Lift the positive terminal assembly straight off without pulling on its wires.
• Support the terminal assembly so its wiring isn't stretched or damaged.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

• Locate the retaining clamp at the battery's lower edge.
• Use the 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and clamp.

• Attach the 75-pound battery lifting strap securely, or grasp the battery handles with both hands.
• Lift the battery straight upward while keeping it level.
• Set it upright on a stable surface away from children and pets.

Step 6: Clean and inspect the tray

Step 7: Install the new battery

Step 9: Connect the positive terminal

• Install the red protector washer over the positive post if using protector washers.
• Push the positive terminal fully down onto the positive post.
• Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
• Close the red protective cover.

Step 10: Connect the negative terminal

• Install the black protector washer over the negative post if using protector washers.
• Push the negative terminal fully down onto the negative post.
• Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
• Check that neither terminal can rotate by hand. Don't overtighten the clamps.

Step 11: Complete a final inspection

• Use your safety glasses and visually confirm the positive and negative cables are on the correct posts.
• Verify the hold-down is installed and no tools remain in the engine compartment.
• Make sure the positive cover is closed before lowering the hood.
