🔧 Tahoe - 12-Volt Battery Replacement
The battery is located under the hood on the passenger side. Replacement involves removing the support brace, disconnecting the negative and positive terminals, and lifting the battery from its tray.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
Assumption: Your Tahoe has its original-style Group 48/H6 battery installation.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn off the ignition and remove the key before touching the battery.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; battery acid can cause serious burns.
- 🔥 Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
- 🔌 Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
- 🛑 Never allow a tool to touch the positive terminal and metal body simultaneously.
- 🏋️ The battery weighs approximately 18-23 kg; use a battery carrier or get lifting assistance.
- ⚡ Do not perform this repair while a charger is connected.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 150mm socket extension

If the removed battery is marked AGM, install another AGM battery. Do not replace an AGM battery with a conventional flooded battery.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tahoe on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off every electrical accessory.
- ⏳ Open the hood and wait at least two minutes after turning off the ignition so the vehicle’s electronic modules can shut down.
- 🔑 Keep the key or remote away from the vehicle while working.
- 📻 Save any preferred radio settings if desired. Battery registration or scan-tool programming is not required.
- 🧹 Check the new battery for cracks, leakage, and correct positive-terminal orientation before installation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the battery
- Raise the hood and locate the battery at the passenger-front corner of the engine compartment.
- Use your hands to remove the battery’s plastic top cover, if equipped.
Step 2: Remove the support brace
- Use a 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the fasteners securing the brace above or beside the battery.
- Lift the brace away and place it where it cannot be bent or scratched.
- Photograph the brace position before removal.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative terminal
- Identify the negative terminal by its black cable and minus symbol.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist and lift the clamp from the battery post. Move it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Do not completely remove the clamp nut from the terminal.
Step 4: Disconnect the positive terminal
- Open the red positive-terminal cover by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive clamp from the battery post and position it safely away from the battery.
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- The hold-down is the small bracket that locks the bottom edge of the battery to its tray.
- Use a 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and bracket.
- Keep the bracket and bolt together so they are not dropped into the engine compartment.
Step 6: Lift out the old battery
- Attach the battery lifting carrier rated 25 kg minimum securely to the battery.
- Lift the battery straight upward while keeping it level. Battery electrolyte can leak if the case is tilted.
- Set the battery upright on a stable surface.
- Ask for help if the battery feels heavy.
Step 7: Inspect and clean the tray
- Wear acid-resistant mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Inspect the tray, hold-down, and cable ends for corrosion or damage.
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to remove light corrosion from the inside of both cable clamps.
- Replace damaged cables or a badly corroded tray before installing the battery.
Step 8: Install the new battery
- Use the battery lifting carrier rated 25 kg minimum to lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same orientation as the old battery.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and does not trap either cable underneath it.
- Reinstall the lower hold-down bracket and bolt using a 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench.
- Torque the battery hold-down bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Push the battery firmly by hand to verify that it cannot slide or tip.
Step 9: Connect the positive terminal
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque the terminal clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant and close the red cover.
Step 10: Connect the negative terminal
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque the terminal clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant.
- Small sparks may occur as vehicle modules power up, but stop immediately if there is heavy arcing or smoke.
Step 11: Reinstall the support brace
- Position the brace exactly as it was installed originally.
- Start all fasteners by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use a 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the brace fasteners.
- Torque the brace fasteners to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the plastic battery cover by hand, if equipped.
✅ After Repair
- 🚙 Start your Tahoe and confirm that it cranks normally.
- 🔍 Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and restore saved audio settings if necessary.
- 🪟 If express window operation is lost, fully lower that window, then fully raise it and hold the switch upward for two seconds.
- 🔧 Battery registration or coding is not required on your Tahoe.
- ♻️ Keep the old battery upright and return it to a battery retailer or authorized recycling facility.
