๐ง Impala - 12-Volt Battery Replacement
Your Impalaโs battery sits beneath the underhood battery cover. Replacement involves removing the cover and hold-down, disconnecting the negative cable first, and installing a correctly sized replacement battery.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
Assumption: This procedure is for the factory battery arrangement on the U.S.-market Impala.
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- โ ๏ธ Turn the ignition off and keep the key fob away from your Impala.
- ๐งค Wear gloves and safety glasses; batteries contain corrosive acid.
- โก Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
- ๐ฅ Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
- ๐ง Never let a metal tool touch both battery terminals or a positive terminal and body metal simultaneously.
- ๐๏ธ The battery is heavy. Lift it upright with both hands.
- ๐ซ Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 6-inch socket extension
- 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
- 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 5-50 Nm
- Battery terminal puller (specialty)
- Battery terminal cleaning brush (specialty)
- Battery lifting strap rated 50 lb minimum
- Plastic trim tool
- Nitrile mechanic gloves
- Safety glasses

- Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1
๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your Impala on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off every electrical accessory.
- ๐๏ธ Open the hood, switch the ignition off, remove the key fob from the vehicle, and wait at least two minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- ๐ช Lower the driverโs window before beginning so you cannot accidentally lock yourself out.
- ๐ป Record saved radio stations and personalized settings. Some settings may be lost when power is disconnected.
- ๐ Match the replacement batteryโs physical size, terminal orientation, hold-down design, cold-cranking rating, and battery type to the original label.
- ๐ซ A memory saver is not required. Avoid connecting an external memory saver unless you are trained to use one safely.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the battery compartment
- Raise the hood and support it fully.
- Locate the battery and lift off its plastic cover using your hands. If a clip resists, release it gently with a plastic trim tool.
- Note the positive and negative terminal positions before disconnecting anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp marked โโโ.
- Twist and lift the clamp from the battery post. Use a battery terminal puller if it is stuck; do not pry against the battery case.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Do not remove or strike the battery current sensor attached to the negative cable.
- Negative off first prevents accidental short circuits.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable
- Open the red positive-terminal cover by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive clamp marked โ+โ.
- Lift the clamp away and position it where it cannot touch the battery post or body metal.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the retaining block at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and retaining block.
- Keep the bolt and block together for installation.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Attach a battery lifting strap and lift the battery straight upward with both hands.
- Keep the battery upright. Place it on a stable surface away from children and pets.
- Inspect the tray for corrosion, cracks, or loose hardware.
Step 6: Clean and inspect the connections
- Wear nitrile mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside surfaces of both cable clamps.
- Confirm that the cables, negative-cable current sensor, battery tray, and hold-down are undamaged.
Step 7: Install the replacement battery
- Use a battery lifting strap to lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals facing exactly like the original.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and fully against the tray stops.
- Reinstall the retaining block and bolt using a 13mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench.
- Torque the battery hold-down bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Push the battery by hand to verify that it cannot move.
Step 8: Connect the positive cable
- Press the positive clamp fully down onto the positive post marked โ+โ.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal fastener.
- Torque the positive terminal fastener to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protector spray and close the red cover.
- Do not overtighten; excessive force can damage the battery post.
Step 9: Connect the negative cable
- Press the negative clamp fully down onto the negative post marked โโโ.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal fastener.
- Torque the negative terminal fastener to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protector spray.
- Negative connects last for safer installation.
Step 10: Reinstall the battery cover
- Position the plastic battery cover over the battery by hand.
- Press each retaining point into place until the cover is secure.
- Remove all tools from the engine compartment and close the hood.
โ After Repair
- โ Start your Impala and confirm that it cranks normally.
- ๐ Verify that the charging-system warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- ๐ Reset the clock, radio presets, and personalized settings if necessary.
- ๐ช If automatic window operation is lost, close the affected window fully and continue holding the switch upward briefly; then test automatic operation.
- ๐ Turn the steering wheel smoothly from center toward each side, then drive normally for a short distance if a temporary steering or stability message appears.
- ๐ Battery registration or programming is not normally required for this factory configuration.
- โป๏ธ Return the old battery to a battery retailer or recycling facility. Never place it in household waste.
