Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

- Pull the connector straight off by the connector body, not by the wires.
- Open the rubber protective boot on the main alternator output cable.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the output cable nut.
- Move the cable aside safely.
- During installation, tighten the alternator output terminal nut to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the upper alternator mounting bolt if equipped.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the lower alternator mounting bolt.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the final bolt.
- Lift the alternator upward and out of the engine bay.
- It may need a gentle wiggle.
Step 7: Compare the New Alternator
- Place the old and new alternators side by side.
- Check that the pulley, electrical connector, mounting ears, and output terminal location match.
- Spin the new pulley by hand; it should turn smoothly with no scraping.
Step 8: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into position by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the upper bolt if equipped.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lower bolt.
- Use a torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect Alternator Wiring
- Place the main output cable onto the alternator output stud.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the output terminal nut to Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Push the rubber protective boot fully back over the terminal.
- Reconnect the small electrical connector until it clicks.
- The boot prevents accidental short circuits.
Step 10: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo or mark as a guide.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or long 14mm box wrench to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can damage the belt.
Step 11: Reinstall Removed Covers or Ducts
- Reinstall any removed intake duct or plastic cover.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any bolts.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover or your fingers to reinstall plastic clips without bending them.
- Tighten small cover bolts snug only; do not over-tighten plastic parts.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply battery terminal protector spray to the clean battery terminal if desired.
- Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the negative terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Make sure the cable does not twist or move by hand.
Step 13: Check Charging Voltage
- Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
- With the engine off, a healthy charged battery is usually about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and check again.
- With the engine running, the charging voltage should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Turn on headlights and blower motor, then confirm voltage stays in the charging range.
