How to Replace the Alternator on a 2018 Ford Focus 1.0L Turbo (Engine: Inline 3 1.0L)
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, torque specs, belt routing, and charging tests for 2018
🔧 Focus - Alternator Replacement
Replacing the alternator restores battery charging and prevents stalling, no-starts, dim lights, and battery warning messages. On your Focus with the 1.0L turbo engine, the alternator is belt-driven and mounted on the front of the engine, so access is tight but manageable with patience.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring. The alternator has a direct battery power cable.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the turbocharger, exhaust, and belt area.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, and clothing away from the serpentine belt path.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if raising it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ The serpentine belt tensioner is spring-loaded. Move it slowly and keep a firm grip on the wrench.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Write down any radio presets if you want to save them before disconnecting the battery.
- A serpentine belt is the single drive belt that spins the alternator and other engine accessories.
- A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
- Use a digital multimeter after the repair to confirm the alternator is charging correctly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Negative cable first, always.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your Focus at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the correct front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension set to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic clips without breaking them.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
Step 4: Record the Belt Routing
- Use your phone or a work light to clearly view the serpentine belt path.
- Take a photo before removing the belt.
- This helps you install the new belt in the correct direction around each pulley.
- A photo prevents guesswork.
Step 5: Release Belt Tension
- Fit the serpentine belt tool (specialty) onto the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to remove tension from the belt.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
- If reusing the old belt temporarily, mark its rotation direction with a flat-blade screwdriver or marker before removal.
Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connectors
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the alternator control connector locking tab.
- Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the nut from the main alternator power cable.
- Move the power cable aside and make sure it cannot touch metal.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension set to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- If the alternator is stuck in the bracket, gently rock it by hand. Do not pry hard against aluminum parts.
Step 8: Remove the Alternator
- Work the alternator out through the available space from below.
- Use the work light to watch for hoses, wiring, and brackets.
- Do not force the alternator past the turbo or coolant hoses.
- Slow movement avoids broken connectors.
Step 9: Install the New Alternator
- Position the new alternator into the mounting bracket.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Install the main alternator power cable onto the stud.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench rated 5-80 Nm to tighten the power cable nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Push the control connector onto the alternator until it clicks.
- Give the connector a light tug to confirm it is locked.
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Use the work light to verify the belt ribs sit correctly in every grooved pulley.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Lift the lower splash shield into place.
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension set to install the fasteners.
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to help seat any push clips cleanly.
- Tighten small splash shield screws snug only. Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Focus slowly to the ground.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the negative battery cable clamp.
- Do not overtighten the clamp. It only needs to be secure and unable to twist by hand.
Step 15: Check Charging Voltage
- Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery terminal and the black lead to the negative battery terminal.
- With the engine off, a healthy charged battery should read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and check again. Charging voltage should be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- If voltage stays near 12 volts with the engine running, stop and recheck the alternator connector, power cable, belt routing, and battery connections.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Listen for belt squeal, rubbing, or grinding noises with the engine running.
- ✅ Confirm the battery warning light turns off after startup.
- ✅ Turn on headlights, blower fan, and rear defroster, then recheck charging voltage with the digital multimeter.
- ✅ Drive gently for 10-15 minutes and recheck for warning lights.
- ✅ If the battery was deeply discharged, fully charge it with a battery charger. A new alternator should not be used as a dead-battery charger.
