🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion if the terminal is dirty.
- Always disconnect negative first.
Step 2: Remove the Upper Engine Cover Area if Needed

Step 3: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing

- Note bolt length and position so each bolt goes back in the same place.
Step 9: Remove the Alternator from the Bracket
- Use both hands to rock the alternator gently forward and backward.
- If it sticks in the bracket, use a flathead screwdriver only as a gentle lever at the mounting ear.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
- Do not force aluminum brackets.
Step 10: Compare the New Alternator
- Set the old and new alternators side by side on a clean surface.
- Check that the pulley, mounting ears, electrical connector, and charge stud are in the same positions.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to transfer any required cable nut or small bracket only if the replacement unit requires it.
Step 11: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the mounting bolts.
- Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reconnect the Charge Cable
- Place the charge cable eyelet onto the alternator output stud.
- Install the terminal nut by hand first.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to tighten the nut.
- Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the charge cable nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Close the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
Step 13: Reconnect the Alternator Plug
- Push the electrical connector straight into the alternator until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.
Step 14: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Use the 17mm wrench or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner and create slack.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley last.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
- One missed groove can shred the belt.
Step 15: Reinstall Covers and Ducting
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any intake duct fasteners removed earlier.
- Use your hands and a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips.
- Snap the engine cover back into place by hand if removed.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply battery terminal protectant to the clean battery terminal if available.
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
