📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. A negative battery cable is the black cable marked “−”.
  • 📸 Take a photo of the belt routing before removal. This helps you install the new belt correctly.
  • 🧰 If the lower splash shield blocks access, raise the front of your Tucson with a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it away from the battery.
  • Wrap cable end with a rag.

Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover and Intake Duct

  • Pull the plastic engine cover upward by hand to release it from its rubber mounts.
  • Use a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake duct clamp if it blocks your access.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps attached to the duct.
  • Move the duct aside carefully.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield if Needed

  • Use a trim clip remover to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • A splash shield is the plastic panel under the engine that keeps water and road debris out.

Step 4: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Find the belt tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Place the serpentine belt tool 17mm adapter or 17mm socket on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to loosen the belt.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley by hand while holding the tensioner.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Compare the old belt to the new belt to confirm the same length and rib count.
  • Inspect each pulley by spinning it by hand. It should turn smoothly with no grinding.

Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connectors

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the locking tab on the small alternator connector, then unplug it by hand.
  • Remove the rubber cover from the alternator output terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the output terminal nut.
  • Lift the large power wire off the alternator stud and move it aside.
  • The output terminal is the large threaded post where the heavy charging cable attaches.

Step 7: Remove Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to remove the upper alternator mounting bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the lower alternator mounting bolt.
  • If access is tight, use the 1/2-inch ratchet for extra leverage.

Step 8: Remove the Alternator

  • Work the alternator out of its bracket by hand.
  • If it is stuck, gently rock it side to side. Do not pry against aluminum engine parts.
  • Lift the alternator out from the top if there is room, or lower it out through the bottom if access is easier.
  • Take your time in tight spaces.

Step 9: Install the New Alternator

  • Place the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 Nm to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 39-54 Nm (29-40 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect Alternator Wiring

  • Place the large power wire onto the alternator output stud by hand.
  • Install the output terminal nut using a 12mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 Nm to tighten the output terminal nut to Torque to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber cover back over the terminal by hand.
  • Plug in the small alternator connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is usually the easiest pulley to slip the belt over.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 17mm adapter or 17mm socket to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
  • Slip the belt over the alternator pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.

Step 12: Reinstall Removed Covers and Ducts

  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamp using a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall any hose clamps using needle-nose pliers.
  • Push the engine cover back onto its rubber mounts by hand.
  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a trim clip remover for clips and a 10mm socket for bolts.
  • Tighten splash shield bolts snugly to Torque to 7-10 Nm (62-89 in-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
  • Tighten only until secure. Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 14: Check Charging Voltage

  • Set a digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • A healthy charging system should read about 13.5-14.8 volts at the battery with the engine running.
  • Turn on headlights and blower fan, then confirm voltage remains stable above about 13.2 volts.

  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rattling with the engine running.
  • ✅ Watch the belt for one minute. It should run smoothly and stay centered on each pulley.
  • ✅ Confirm the battery warning light on the dash turns off after startup.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and one-touch window auto function if needed after battery disconnect.
  • ✅ Test drive your Tucson for 10-15 minutes, then recheck charging voltage with a digital multimeter.
  • ✅ Recheck the alternator output terminal cover to make sure the power stud is fully protected.
