Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

- Remove the negative cable from the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery.

- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first while holding the tensioner released.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys if you are replacing it.
- Do not let the tensioner snap back.
Step 5: Disconnect Alternator Electrical Connectors
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the locking tab on the small alternator electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight off by the connector body, not by the wires.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the nut from the alternator output cable stud, depending on the replacement unit and terminal style.
- Remove the output cable from the stud and cover the cable end with a clean rag so it cannot touch metal.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts are removed.
- Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Keep track of bolt locations because different bolts may be different lengths.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.

Step 7: Compare the New Alternator
- Place the old and new alternator side by side.
- Check that the pulley, mounting ears, electrical connector, and battery cable stud match.

Step 8: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into position by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the mounting bolts.
- Use a torque wrench, 10-80 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect Alternator Wiring
- Install the alternator output cable onto the alternator stud.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket and torque wrench, 10-80 ft-lbs to tighten the output cable nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Push the small electrical connector onto the alternator until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo or the under-hood routing decal.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the belt tensioner again.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 11: Reinstall Covers
- Use the trim clip removal tool to align plastic push clips if removed.
- Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any cover fasteners.
- Snug plastic cover fasteners lightly by hand. Do not overtighten them.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply battery terminal protectant to the clean battery terminal if desired.
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp until it does not twist by hand.
- Do not overtighten the battery clamp because it can crack the terminal.
Step 13: Check Charging Voltage
- Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
- With the engine off, a healthy charged battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and read the meter again.
- With the engine running, charging voltage should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Turn on headlights, blower fan, and rear defogger, then confirm voltage stays stable above about 13 volts.
