🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post. If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty).
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
- Never remove alternator wiring with battery connected.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover
- If equipped, lift the engine cover upward by hand to release the rubber grommets.
- If any retainers are fitted, use a flat-blade trim tool to release them gently.
- Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
Step 3: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing
- Use your phone to take a photo of the belt path around the pulleys.
- Compare your photo to the under-hood belt routing decal.
- Look closely at the alternator pulley and belt ribs so you can reinstall the belt the same way.
Step 4: Release Belt Tension
- Place the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar into the square drive opening on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley by hand while holding the tensioner released.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
- Slow movement protects the tensioner spring.
Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Pull the belt out of the engine bay by hand.
- Inspect it for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or oil contamination.
- Replace the belt if any damage is found. This is strongly recommended while the belt is already off.
Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connector
- Locate the small electrical plug on the rear of the alternator.
- Press the connector locking tab by hand and pull the connector straight off.
- If the tab is hard to press, use a flat-blade trim tool gently. Do not pry against the wires.
- Move the connector aside.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator Battery Cable
- Open the protective rubber boot on the large alternator output terminal.
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the B+ terminal nut.
- Lift the battery cable eyelet off the alternator stud.
- Keep the cable away from metal brackets.
- Discard the old terminal nut if your replacement alternator includes or requires a new one.
Step 8: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand before removing the last bolt.
- Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- If your alternator has an additional small bracket fastener, remove it with a 10mm socket or 13mm socket as fitted.
- Lift the alternator out of the bracket and remove it from the engine bay.
- It is heavier than it looks.
Step 9: Compare the Old and New Alternators
- Place both alternators side by side on a clean surface.
- Confirm the pulley size, pulley grooves, electrical connector shape, mounting ears, and rear terminal position match.
- Spin the new pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without grinding.
- If the replacement alternator came with a protective cap on the output stud, remove it by hand before installation.
Step 10: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm and 15mm socket to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
- If an additional small bracket fastener was removed, tighten it with the correct socket to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Alternator Battery Cable
- Place the battery cable eyelet squarely onto the alternator output stud.
- Install the new alternator B+ terminal nut by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm to tighten the nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Close the protective rubber boot fully over the terminal.
- Do not overtighten this nut. The alternator stud can be damaged.
Step 12: Reconnect the Alternator Electrical Connector
- Push the small electrical connector straight onto the alternator until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
Step 13: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around all pulleys except the alternator pulley, using your photo and the under-hood decal.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits fully inside the ribbed pulleys.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley with a flashlight and your fingers. The belt must be centered and fully seated.
- One rib off can destroy the belt.
Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Set the engine cover back in place by hand.
- Press down evenly until the rubber grommets seat.
- If retainers were removed, reinstall them using a flat-blade trim tool only if needed.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal corrosion protectant to the battery post if needed.
- Place the negative battery terminal back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the clamp. Battery posts are soft lead and can deform.
Step 16: Verify Charging Voltage
- Set your digital multimeter to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the battery positive post and the black lead to the battery negative post.
- Before starting, a healthy charged battery should read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- With the engine running, voltage should usually read about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Turn on headlights and blower fan, then confirm voltage remains stable.
